Anyone Remove / Replace the Engine?
Anyone Remove / Replace the Engine?
Hello all, wondering if anyone out there has ever removed, or replaced the 3V engine and if so how big of a deal is it? I have an 05 Expy 4x4, so I'm planning on it being a bear.
I'm thinking of pulling the motor to replace the oil pump and screen, all of the timing components, (this time using the ratchet type tensioners) and pull both heads to get a good look at the camshafts the journals and the lifters.
I have been chasing a floating miss with no codes and now the engine has picked up some noises upon cold startup for about 2 or 3 seconds, so I'm tired of chasing issues and thinking of pulling the engine and rebuild some of it.
Any thoughts or experience on the difficulty of removing the engine?
Thanks everyone.

Well it sounds like you want to do alot of extra work to perform a couple of much easier repair jobs. First off you can change the oil pump by removing the front cover and while you have the cover off you can replace all the timing components. As far as inspecting the cams, lifters, etc. just take a good look while you have the cam covers off which you have to do to remove the front cover...I see no need to remove the entire engine for what you are going to do. The startup noise could be caused by something as simple as using the wrong brand oil filter...
Thanks for the information. In addition to the pump itself, I was thinking I would also pull out the oil pump screen and unless I'm mistaken, you would need to drop the pan to get at it.
Also, even though it is not listed in this thread, I think I have covered just about every external part a person could think of, so since I am going to tear into the motor again, I'm thinking this time I may pull it, so I can get to the things I need to much easier... but I was hoping someone out there has some experience pulling these motors out of an 05'ish expy...and they could give me some idea of the difficulty level involved, that's all.
Thanks again.

Seems to me that if you go to the trouble to pull the engine, and rip it apart, and replace about $1K in parts you might as well drop another engine in it? I know that money is probably an issue...but it would seem like money and time better spent to get a good remanufactured engine?
Trust me...there are the 3 or 4 of us chasing similar problems...I've considered the new engine...just no $$$ to do it...but if I were to go through the trouble to pull it, I wouldn't be just lookin around at it...I would be replacing it...
FWIW! Good luck!
