thrust bearing question

I've got a 99 f150 5.4l that I am trying to install the 3 piece thrust bearings. Two of them are self explanatory ( I think) but the one without the little ear on it fits on #5 cap with the tab in the slot. Does anything go into the groove on the other side of #5 cap???? If not, how does that work??? Thanks in advance!!!

You have the upper main bearing, the lower thrust main bearing and the thrust washer. The lower has the shoulders and snaps into the #5 main cap. The upper looks like all the other upper bearings. The thrust washer is just a half moon washer fits in the outside of the block behind ( to the rear of the upper bearing). it is sandwiched between the block and the crank. Nothing goes to the inside of the block. Just three pieces are all you are using for the thrust.

x2. Only 3 pieces, 2 of which go on the outside of the block.

Also, the grooves face outward for lubrication. Good luck with the rebuild!
