F150 swap

Hey guys I have 99 f150 lariat ext cab step side with a 5.4 2v v8 with 280k miles and still running strong. When the motor gives up I was thinking of swapping a 5.4 32 valve from a navigator what's the best year from the navigator to swap into my truck and so it will work. Also what motors are also great thx.

In my opinion, the 32v isn't worth it. You only get 5 ft/lb of torque. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Here is everything you need to know:

Ya that sounds like a cool swap but has it been done with the 97-03 f150s ?

I'd just rebuild the 5.4 2 valve you have.

why would you want to swap an engine in when the one you have has been so reliable? I would never change out the 5.4 2v in my truck. One of the best engines Ford has made.

My son in law has a 98 with a 4.6, his kid ran it out of oil and seized it up. He found a 5.4 out of a 98 with only 130k on it for $750, he's seriously thinking about doing the swap.

Yeah, but the 40 extra ponies over basically the same powerband means quite a bit--as in less choking off at higher RPMs. I'm sure four cams could help, too.

8,800 lbs towing cap with a vehicle heavier than an F150 tells me it's not just about airbag suspension...

4 valves per cylinder will generally provide less low end torque unless variable valve timing is implemented. The torque curve of the 2v is pretty flat where the 4v has a ramp shape.

Towing capacity has very little to do with horsepower. My F150 has a V10 and that doesn't mean I increased its towing capacity. It tows MUCH better than it did with the 5.4, but it won't safely tow more weight. That requires brakes, suspension, axles, etc. It was a 40 HP raise, but it's the 75 LB/FT of torque that helps with the tug.

I don't spend much time above 3500 RPM, so that HP up there is fairly meaningless. Again, this MY opinion, and it really depends on what the OP has planned for the truck.

For towing, the Navi motor won't help much. For racing or forced induction, the Navi motor will make a big difference.

what is your budget and is it a daily driver?

if you just have to keep this truck i would rebuild, go with a ported head or tfs head and a customer tune. then start thinking about a transmission.

honestly. i would start budgeting to sale current truck and up grade to say a 2007 -2009 model with the 3v. hopefully you can take it to 280k miles.
