New to the 5.4

Hi guys and gals,

As the title says I am new to the 5.4 and have to say after doing alot of reading already I am a little leary. I have been around fords all my life, my dad was a die hard ford man and it was carried down to me. My last truck was a 71 F100 with the explorer package....PS/PB/Auto with factory AC. It was fun rebuilding that truck and now I am on to this rig. I hope to be able to answer alot of my own questions using the search tool but sometimes that doesnt always work out well. My biggest fear is the engine obviously, past info I have gotten from the PO is that it has blown out a plug in the past but has had them all replaced. It has 280k miles on it. I am kind of hoping that anything that could have gone wrong with it has already happened in that time frame.
Anything that I should be looking for would be helpful.

The 2V 5.4 is a solid engine, evidenced by the 280,000 already on yours. If it blew out a plug and they used a Timesert repair, that will last. First thing I would do is torque the plugs to 28 ft lbs.

the 5.4-2v is as good an engine as any as far as reliability goes. They can last 450 thousand miles if maintained.

Thanks for the replies guys, makes me feel a little better about it. I put it in the shop today because the rearend had a whining during acceleration. Hoping it's just a bearing but I am prepared for ring and pinion and we'll as bearings.

Hoah! That's almost 4 times sweet miles than some average.
