Anything is possible..If you suspect the U joint then change it not expensive. One knock only one time on startup or rather on acceleration from a stop. I would lean toward the drivetrain at this point. Others here have more experience than I do with tuning issues so if they say they have had that problem I would believe what they are saying and change things up to see if it solves your problem. Although it may not be a problem is there anything that can be done about it. Like a pull and clean of the lifter?
Well sometimes I give more information than is necessary and make things more confusing than it has to be...lol.
The noise issues I was referring to on both the 5.4 an 5.0 was piston related not rod and was not a durability concern.

power brake in drive w/ hood open to see if engine is lifting up. Broken motor mount?? Sway bar links ok? u-jts shouldn't have any movement in them, but shaft may move a little in trans up & Down.

5.4ford engine timing marks

2004 5.4 engine is a interference engine , it was posted as non interfaces engine Which is wrong & misleading to those who want the right information. If turn the motor over it will cause valve damage if timing marks. Are incorrect posistion.
