Cool

HI!... SDDL-UP : It's true that the 5.4 TRITON only has " 4 " bolts to hold the main caps down. But they also have a solid steel dowel that goes next to the bolt that goes straight down into the block. I'm not sure but I think it is close to being a 1/4 in diameter. My friends that work in the dyno room says that makes it the equivlent of a "6" bolt main and that is what they clasify it as, at the ESSEX ENDGINE PLANT here in WINDSOR. Just because it does'nt have actually "6" bolts, does'nt mean it isn't as strong as one that does. For example on my 351-w it's only a "2" bolt main but with the edition of a D.S.S aluminum stud girdle it's stronger than a "4" bolt main. What it all comes down to is if it's a bolt or a dowel or a stud girdle as long as it prevents the "WALKING" of the main caps. In turn making the block more ridged and therefore stronger.

Talking

Now there's something you don't see everday...those "ladder type" main cap girdles! I don't know who came up with the idea, but I know exactly what you're talking about. I was led to believe that there is only a SINGLE locating dowel on ONE of the main bearing caps, but like I said I don't know for sure.

BTW... I have a 2 WD '86 Ranger to work on, it's just begging to get a mild (275 HP or so) 289 and a C4!
