this is somethig that is in your owners manual. If you have the tow package your are rated to pull about 7,000 lbs. In all reality, the question is.........how much frontal area? If its is a flat bed there is no wind resistance. If its a 5th wheel that a differnt story. Dont expect to go fast and keep it out of overdrive. Some people do fine others say its not enough power. Just remember its 281 cubic inches not a 460.

Tony,

I used to tow a pretty heavy deck boat, prolly 4500lbs, with my 97 F150 Supercab with the 4.6L. On flat ground you might get away with using the OD. On the slightest hill it will shift into D. You will also be using 2nd gear a lot too. Expect your mpg to drop to single digits. 7.5mpg was my worst. I get 9-10mpg towing the same boat with my V10.

I did it with my 99, 6500 pounds with a tow pack and trailer brakes. It wasn't fast nor pretty but it did it. I would never do it without a tow pack.

Happy towing

I tow a lot. One of my trailers is a bbq pit on tandem trailer, approx. 3500 lbs. I can hardly tell it is back there until I have to stop. The last time I checked mileage while towing was a 150 mile trip, stop and go, with this trailer and got 13.7 mpg. My big trailer, about 25 ft with 23 ft Mako, twin 140s and 100 gal. gas probably is around 7000 lbs., forget overdrive or passing anything, it is straining, but probably anything short of the v10 or powerstroke would be. They 4.6 will handle 5000lbs, just don't get in a hurry. PS, the mods I added helped a lot especially the chip.

Tony,

that is pretty much what I hauled with my 4.6, a U-Haul car trailer and a 71 GMC pickup. Total weight was around 6500 lbs. I have a 3.55 LS rear end and did 55-65 mph for 600 miles, no overdrive and 12mpg. Like Johnny says, don't be in a hurry!
