Engine almost overheating when its hot outside?

I've noticed since it has gotten hot outside that when I drive my truck for more than 45 minutes the temperature gauge will get close to the red in the overheating area. It never actually touches the red area or overheat but hovers close to it. Is it normal to fluctuate that much when its hot outside or should it always stay in the low range no matter how long I drive it? And can it hurt the engine still even if it doesn't actually overheat?

What year, what engine.

anything above normal can cause damage.

can you hear the fan roaring loudly when it gets hot?

2001, V8, but I don't think I hear the fan making any noise. Maybe there is a blockage somewhere? Idk

You probably have some blockage which can be in the radiator or could be a partially closed thermostat. Is the radiator clean, have you done a flush and changed coolant? It could be the clutch fan as well but probably a partial blockage.

I had an overheating issue on a 5.4L- 2000 LS a while back and would only happen sometimes out of the blue. Seemed to happen when I had the air conditioner off and I couldn't understand then I opened the radiator cap and it was under pressure cold.
That fixed it. I guess the pressure was keeping it from rotating or causing the sensor to overheat is all I can think of.

Its 4.6, and I changed the thermostat like a year ago, and I had the coolant changed recently within a couple months. Where should I look at for blockages?

Get the truck warm and up to operating temperature. And use an infrared temp gun and see if there is any cold sections or cooler sections on the radiator
