4.6L Oil Filter
4.6L Oil Filter
I'm looking at two different used SC, 4X4's with the 4.6L engine. On the '98, the oil filter is located in the front left corner of the engine compartment, tucked up behind the bumper. On the '00, the oil filter is on the engine, way down behind a lot of hoses and componentry. My question - did Ford change something, or does the '98 had some remote oil filter kit? That '00 sure looks like a tough filter to get at for changing oil. How tough is it, guys? Thanks
Don't know about the changes but I will say that the drip pan under the filter on the newer engines does exactly what I called it. It drips oil all over my garage floor. Poor design if you ask me. Serviceability stinks.

Can't speak for the '00 but my '97 4.6L 4x4 is a reall pain in the *** to change on the motor. I only wish mine was remote mounted where I could actually get a hand on it. Oh yeah, my '97 has a drip pan on it too, they are called the transfer case, front crossmember, etc. What a mess. If you don't get up in there with a rag or something after an oil change you get this nice burning oil smell for about 3 weeks afterward too........

Anyone know where to get a remote filter relocation kit? I've looked this engine over well, and it appears that changing the oil won't be the only thing that's tougher to do than it should be -- am I right guys?
My 97 4x4 has the remoted filter. Real easy to change. I didn't know this was an option. Now I'm wondering if it includes any type of oil cooler??

JC Whitney has a Permacool remote filter kit for under $50. Was thinking about doing one myself. I've changed my oil 4 times now and although it really isn't as difficult as it looks, it is very messy. I generally waste a bunch of paper towel cleaning the drip pan. It is also very important to have your wheels either straight or turned one direction. Can't remember which way they should be turned though. Last time I changed it I had the wheels the wrong way and the filter unscrewed ok, and dumped its load. but I couldn't get it out from behind the steering crossmembers. Now picture an oil filter pouring out, you can't remove it because the wheels are turned the wrong way and anybody ever tried to turn the fron wheels, sitting still without power steering after wiping the oil off a hand. ##$@%%####!@@!!!

Summit has one of the relocation kits too. I tried the one that Perma-Cool makes.... it sucks!!!!!!!! You have to put the clamps on real pain!!!!!!!! Summit Racing has one TD Relocation kit & hoses are maded up no SS clamps to come loose like perma cools. I have this one on now for 8 months no leaks at all. Real nice & easy to get filter off. Plus I put on a Fumoto Drain vavle too. ..Lariat#1 has this one too, look at his signature.
