Question Short Spark Plug Life

Need some help please...

I just had to replace a coil pack on my 2001 XLT 4.6 and when checking
the plugs discovered that they were toast - heavily worn and rounded.
They were only in the truck for 5K/2 years.

You can see that I don't put a lot of miles on the truck, but I don't think
that should be a factor. A friend suggested that they got fried when the
coil pack went.

Any other ideas on what would lead to such a short lifespan?

Thanks.

Have you done any mods that would make it run lean? Also, worn plugs causes stress on the coils and can shorten their life.

Other than a K&N air filter, everything under the hood is factory.

The drop in filter or full CAI?

K&N's do not filter well and the oil can foul the MAF. I'd bet that if you pulled the intake tube off, you may find a lot of dust in it that got past the filter. That dust can be abrasive.

did you use the right plug for the application....if too hot of a plug is used the premature wear can happen, also vacuum leaks can lead to premature wear...

It's rained here today, but I'll take a look at that tomorrow. It's just the drop-in filter.

As for plugs, I've always used OEM standard plugs.

Lean mix is hard on plugs and tops of pistons. Pitch the K&N and double check.

I think that's a good idea.

And that way I know that everything under the hood is standard.
