2005 F150 5.4 rough start and fuel smell

that pretty much says it. Doesn't matter when during the day, 90% of the time when you turn the key it takes several trys to start it and ususally you get a strong gas smell once it does start and a bit of smoke out of the tail pipe. Ideas on what I'm chasing here?

thanks

Bill

thanks for the heads up.
I'm going to guess if this is it the inj is stuck open. in either case, I went past the mileage part of the extension a year ago (146k currently) so I'm out of pocket on what ever is found...fun

Maybe so, but checking/changing the injectors is still way cheaper than bending a rod. I would get on it soon.

Lift the fuel rail with the injectors still attached. Place paper under the injectors and turn the key on. If you have a leaky injector you will see it.

New improved Motorcraft injectors are about 35 bucks each at rockauto.com.
