Synthetic Oils

I have a 99 4x4 with 24k miles on it...I am wanting to switch to synthetic oils but not sure about filter changes or types...does the engine just take a regular oil filter or is there any specialized extended life filter because of the extended times between oil changes...I would appreciate any information and experiences good or bad with synthetic oils...My engine gets the oil changed every 2K to 2.5K regular...I know dino oil has been in exhistance for a long while but I am not opposed to the increased technology and improvments in lubes...Anyway you can answer here if you wish or use my e-mail address of...

srw@newportnet.com

Thanks Steve...

My truck has 22K miles. I switched from Valvoline all climate to Mobil 1 at 10,000 mi. My main reason is that it makes me feel good. Oil filter? I use purolator or motorcraft. Tried the mobil 1 filter but didn't like the way the case was constructed. It ws smooth and round, not flat surfaces for wrench to grip. A little hard to remove. No you don't need a special oil filter. I change my oil at 5K. If you are going to change at 2.5K the cost of synthetic may be prohibitive. I will say this for the Mobil 1. I did have a little engine noise starting on very cold mornings when I was using Valvoline. After changing to Mobil 1 I have not heard the noise again.

Good luck!

Wheeler55....

Mobil 1 is a very top rate synthetic oil.... along with Amsoil...
You can't go wrong using either...

I use Mobil 1... For the fact my local walmart keeps every weight in stock at all times.... and its cheaper the Autozone.... Napa...ect.... in my neck of the State...

I also use it for peice of mind.... I know whether is 106 or 20 deg. below..... It will always flow.... and not form anytype of soot or sludge in my motor.... And most of all lubricate every moving part in these conditions....

There are getting to be many brands of synthetics on the shelf.... I'm sure all are very good.... By Mobil 1 is tried and tested over and over again.... with great success.... This is why I use it... In my engine... Tranny... Rearend... Powersteering... with outever a oil related breakdown ever....

I change my engine oil 2 times a year... once before summer.... once before winter..... inbetween changes i change the filter and add 1 qt.... every 2k miles.... very cheap insurance... Iv'e been doing this with my 88 1-ton dually... and have right at 700K miles on her.... and she uses just a dribble of oil between oil changes... and yes.... I have always used... Mobil 1 in her.... since breakin...
and I can honestly say... I have not had her in the shop one time for anytype of oil related problems... just a few tuneups...

Good Luck with your choice.... Synthetic is the way to go...no dought about it...

thank you guys for your responses....one other quick question I should have thought of when I wrote the first thread...Do I need to go to the synthetic blend for the first change and then to the full synthetic oil or can I just change to the full synthetic oil on my next change...thanks again....Steve

Go for the GOLD,

Sooner the better. If you use a good oil & filter. Amsoil would be mine to use.

All of the performance claims for AMSOIL Products are based on solid testing, facts and nearly 30 years of experience. We stake our company’s reputation on that. Fortunately, we don’t hear from many customers or Dealers that are less than satisfied with our products or their performance.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can help. Thanks

I've heard and read that you should put 10,000 miles on a vehicle before switching to synthetic. This allows the rings to set properly and prevents leakage problems in the long run. The synthetic is a better lubricant, yes. This can cause problems because it extends the break in period.
Second hand knowledge it may be; but, 700,000 miles on MILLIMAR's '88 may be a testament to this.

If I recall right.... all Corvettes-BMW-and a few other High performance sports cars.... Come from the factory with Mobil 1 5w-30 already in the motors.... NEW.....

This just tells me their trust in this great motor oil.... also... You don't need to wait till 3K miles or 1k miles invest in Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil.....

They Have a sticker under the Hood-Telling the new owner to keep using Mobil 1 in this motor to promote longer engine life and better performance....

So I do beleive you can change your oil and add Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil at any time....
