97 f150 4.6 keeps pinging help please
No I haven't pulled plugs yet, probably gonna have a shop do em when I get new plugs
Personally, fine wire Denso's would be choice. IF I was looking for the absolute best. MotorCraft plugs are the fail-safe for these engines tho. Denso's work well in these engines, personal favorites. I went to those years ago, but at the same time I updated the coils, injectors and O2 sensors. I'm not sure what mileage I'm getting now, I just plated the truck again last month. I was getting a solid 16mpg City and HW right after updating everything.
IMO the computer should be able to properly adjust timing. It would take ALLOT of carbon build up to thro that way out, or you would almost have to jump a tooth. Of course the wrong plugs will thro everything off. Only use whats people are recommending here or YOU WILL have issues.
I believe it's more of a combination of maintenance items that are under par. Best thing to do is just go thru it and update everything if you over 100,000 miles. All maintenance stuff, PCV, Air filter, O2's, Cln MAF, etc... And do it RIGHT lol.
Hey , I've gotten 300,000 miles + out of mine and went thru it twice. Strong engines, but they do need good maintenance, if you want longevity.

I've changed Pcv, air filter and cleaned maf already, I haven't got around to plugs and o2's yet
I hear that some if not most 4.6's are prone to pinging for what reason I dot know, could be because of the way the coils fire
As far as carbon build up, one of the passages in the tb was completely clogged it took me half an hour to clean and unclog, down the throat of the intake looked like pretty Nast carbon buildup also so it could very well be carbon but as far as I know the only proper way to get rid of it would be to take heads off and clean the tops of the pistons
You have to use a Motorcraft PCV valve with these engines. In order to obtain the correct opening margins.
Does it ping 100% of the time, or more during cruising speeds, then accelerating. Like to pass someone on the Highway ?

Pings when I'm on the rpms 2500 to 3000 or higher and when I'm climbing hills or hammering on it
Well I was driving it and trying to listen and I can still hear it even with the plug out so idk what the hell is goin on, sounds like I can hear it on the driver side sometimes its hard to hear, sounds like clatter
