Post More FQR!

Ok, it has been 1,500 hundred miles since the FQR was installed. I heard a very scary thing this morning and while sitting at a stop light reving the engine for a blonde (that is another story.) Anyway, I heard some very low knocking. This morning it was right at start-up. Today it was only heard when the engine was reving up.

So far this has been one of the strongest motors have driven in a while though. The torque on the engine is awesome! Ford should be proud to put out the line of Triton engines. The overhead cam design is where the industry is going.

We will see if the piston slap is cured long term. I sure hope it is.

KCdan: I know you just got yours replaced too. What, you out driving the new ponies or what? Let us know how she is running!

I will post more tomorrow, but my truck has been in the shop for 2 days to figure out why it runs so rough and on one occurance filled up the truck with smoke upon start-up and sounds like a quiet diesel, but i will admit that it does not have piston slap anymore, they are going to run compression tests tomorrow and some dye test. They even noticed that it smoked when i started it to drive it off last week when i made the appointment, i hadn't noticed that new feature yet. So they are thinking this will lead to FQR engine #2, So far i am truly not impressed with FORDS FIX, this is the fix i have waited 2 years for well it SUCKS because it makes me say something i never imagined i would say ( I WISH I HAD PISTON SLAP ). I wonder if they still have my old motor in the
shop ? oh well........... enough whining for
today.

That does truly suck!

Did the smokin motor overshadow the exhaust noises?

Let us know how it turns out.

YES the loud Popping noises at this time are a little lower on my complaint list. I hope they can figure out what is going on soon.

FQR motor #2 was ordered yesterday with
no timeframe given on it's expected arrival/install. Whoever they talked to said
they had gotten 3 orders this week to replace newly installed FQR motors. I hope i am the only one on F-150 ONLINE that suffers
this fate of having gotten a bad FQR motor.

I'm not sure if this is correct information or not, but, is it true that if your first year of warranty is up, your dealer will replace the motor with an FQR. But if it isn't, than they replace it with a newer 99 or 00? Assuming you have the piston slap problem.

It is my understanding that anyone with a 1999 truck get's a ( new ) motor and 1997 and 1998 piston slappers are bessed with FQR motors.

Well, I have some bad news. I just got threw riding around in my truck, to get the fqr broke in. For the first 100 miles I did not get over 2000 rpms and for the next hundred miles I didn't get over 2500 rpms. Anyway, in the parking lot I slowly revved it until 2000 rpms. From 1200-1800 rpms it runs rough and misses. From 1500-2200(the highest I went)rpms there was a clicking sound in the motor. Sounds different from anything I have ever heard. Doesn't sound like valves, or spark knock. It sounds like an old atv I had with a wheel bearing going out. Any one have any suggestions on what it is. I will be taking it back to the dealer next week. Are these FQR motors rebuilt?

Hi Guys,

Sorry to hear of your troubles with your FQR engines.

I too have an FQR, but no bad stories (yet). I did just get the truck back from the dealer tonight for an oil leak (gasket skip they say). They think the source was the valve cover and the timing chain cover gaskets.

Regarding performance, so far, I have been quite impressed with this replacement. This motor has a bit more get up and go as compared to the original motor (as measured by hill climbing ability with cruise control on). I think it gets slightly better mileage too. I hope all this continues and nothing bad happens. I am at about 1,500 miles since installation.

Best,

Dirk

Cool

Same here. Mine is working just fine. It too seems to have a little more guts. Time to put on new shocks...

I wonder if dealer install error has anything to do with some of the problems. My dealer had to order some new gaskets that Ford had not supplied with the engine that delayed my install a couple of days. He told me there was a risk of oil leakss if he used the old ones and he wasn't prepared to do that. Just a thought...

Best of luck!
