Post Does this sound like a plug problem...

OCCASIONALY, when starting my truck (96 F150 4.9l inline 6) it won't fire completely. It will catch a little bit but it will idle extremely rough and eventually will die and it dosen't respond to any increase on the gas pedal. I will usually restart several times and after pressing the pedal down it will eventually catch and run fine. This happens very intermitenly. More often than not it fires right up. Does this sound like bad plugs or even an ignition problem at all? It seems to me if it was an ignition problem it would be more constant? Anyone want to take a guess? Regards...

My guess is this problem happens when it is either raining or damp out. If that is the case, a new set of plug wires will fix that problem 9 times out of ten. Good Luck!!

Excuse my ignoranvce but what is my IAC? And no it hasn't rained here in COlorado in a long time so I don't think dampness has much to do with it...But I think I'll change the plugs and wires anyway...

IAC stands for Idle Air Control valve. It is also called an IAB (Idle Air Bypass) valve. It's that cylinder mounted on your throttle body. Sometimes it gets dirty and will hamper the flow of air at idle, causing a rough idle. You should also check the electrical conection at the IAC.

Take care,
-Chris

call 800-627-8800, jacob electronics. They sell a set of wires for the 4.9 and 4.6 which are almost zero resistance (200 apparently) and they make some nice claims about that. There is a thread on the daily active ones which has more info about these wires.. I wanted to get a set for the 5.4 but they don't have em yet. Ask to speak to JW Rogers!

Hey Cloaker just to let you know the 5.4 does not have plug wires. There are individual coils for each plug, and they are on the plug.

Jusy a little info, akula
