Post New 2000 5.4

I have a new 2000 f-150 with the 5.4 engine and it is not as quiet on cold start as it when it warms up, is this possibly piston slap (engine build date of 8-19-99) I once had an old 390 and the rods were bad and it hammered on cold start is this similar to the sound of piston slap, (the new 5.4 does not sound like that)

That is not piston slap...you are fine. Remember when an engine has sat for a period of time(for example over night), all of the oil has drained to the bottom of the engine and it has to be pumped around. An engine which has been recently shut down and restarted..still has oil everywhere..and will sound somewhat different than a cold engine.

Winter temperatures also have an effect on engines. I had a 75 Toronado years ago in Wisconsin, which sat outside year around.. during the winter..the engine would make some very different sounds..and the seats were as hard as a brick..until the heat started working. I never had a problem with it.

Not to worry...as long as your truck does not sound like a diesel truck at start up..you are just fine.

How do you like YOUR 2000 so far? I am really impressed with mine to say the least!

I really love this truck. I have never owned anything but fords and this is one of my favorites. The piston slap problem did have me worried but looks like it was cured back in March. The truck only has 800 miles on it and looks like it gets about 18 mpg. I have had several people tell me how sharp the truck looks.
