Question Ford engineer says "OK to use synthetics"

This maybe old news? But was new to me

This from the RV clinic & performance section...Trailer Life magazine Sept 01

Reader wrote in from Ontario,Canada...Bought new Class C motor home, dealer, as well as Ford dealer and Ford itself all stressed that my Ford warranty would indeed be void if Ford discovered that i had switched to synthetic oil.

This is the reply by the TL Tech team: Word for word....

To answer your letter regarding synthetic oils, I contacted Peter Misangyi of Ford Motor Co. Fuels and Lubricants Engineering department. In reply to your specific question, Mr. Misangyi stated that its okay to use synthetic oils as long as they meet the requirements for both viscosityand performance as stated in the Owner's Manual. Signed...KF (Ken Freund)

So, what do you think? Key words "viscosity" & "performance"

Im still using 5/30 in my 99SC 4.6L(under warranty) as recommended. But man...
hot weather & towing like i do.....Thinking i should go at least 10/30... Still confused

More fuel ( or oil) to this hot topic. OT

I'd stick with 5/30 no matter what. I wouldn't worry about oil break down as much as oil flow. I tried 10/30 and did not like it. These engines are tight. If you are that worried get a oil temp gauge and if needed get an oil cooler that will correct the problem.

Hi Yankee

Know this is old stuff, but alot of controversy.

No, im not "currently" having a problem with my 4.6l $25000.00 truck. Just concerned.

I guess only time will tell if Ford is correct in specifying these lighter wt. oil. Also if these Triton V8s will hold up in the long run.
(some are not even holding up in the short run?)

Good luck. OT

My wife has a '96 Mazda B4000, the owners manual states 10w30 as the recommended oil weight. 5w30 in colder temp. Under the hood on the fan shroud all the Ford stickers say 5w30 recommended.
