Question from a Noob....

Brand new to the forum but I love it so far.

My battery in my 2006 F150 Lariat died a few days ago. I got a jump from someone and went on my way. Ever since that night my check engine light has been on. I do not recall if it came on right after I got a jump but it definitely was not on before that.

I was charging my Iphone for about 30 minutes which shouldn't have killed my battery but it did.
Would the engine light come on if I only needed a new battery?
Otherwise, could being jump started have caused the light to come on?
Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Brandon

Read the codes. You also need to get the battery and alternator tested, parts stores do that free on the vehicle.

What does read the codes mean?
Sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot of the forum.

When the check engine light comes on, trouble codes get stored in the PCM. You need a code reader to read them. In all states except California, parts stores will read the codes free, get them and post the exact numerical codes.

Thanks for your help.
Of course I live in California. I'll keep you posted though.

You can buy a code reader cheaper than you would pay a shop to read them. Click my Amazon link.

Amazon Amazon

WOW, that is a fraction of the price I was expecting. Will that exact machine work on just my truck or all vehicles?
I can't thank you enough.

It will work on almost all OBD2 vehicles from 1996 to present. Ignore post #8 unless the mods delete it, that's a spammer.

Ok I got the code P0607
I looked it up and I think it means "control module performance."
Do you know what that means?
Thank you!

http://engine-codes.com/p0607_ford.html

P0607 FORD - Control Module Performance

Possible causes

- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Engine Control Module (ECM) Harness power supply circuit is open or shorted
- Engine Control Module (ECM) Programming

Tech notes

Check the ECM fuse, if fuse is OK try erasing the code first and if the code comes back you may have to reprogram or replace the ECM.

When is the code detected?

Indicates the ECM has experienced an internal memory fault.

Symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine may not start

P0607 FORD Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) continuously monitors its internal memory status, internal circuits, and output signals to the throttle actuator. This self−check insures that the ECM is functioning properly. If any malfunction is detected, the ECM will set the code and illuminate the engine light.

Can you please help me again...
I can't for the life of me find the ECM fuse in my Owner's Manual. I see lots of things for PCM though. That is not the same thing though, right?
Thanks.

I checked the fuse that says "PCM power" and it was fine.
There is also
PCM 4X4 Power (Two of them)
PCM relay coil
Keep alive memory for PCM
SecuriLock tranceiver (PATS), PCM IGN monitor
PCM

Should I just check all of them? I actually missed the last one until I was just now looking back through my bnook to list them all for you.

I wonder why my code book from the reader that I bought calls it "Engine Control Module" and my Ford manual calls it "Powertrain Control Module."
