engine rebuild

what kind of engine rebuild do you guys suggest on a 5.8L, (Motor is going into my 95 f150 w/blown 5.0.) out of the vehicle with 198,000. keep in mind doing this at my house in a simple garage. was thinking about a gasket rebuild set first. taking the heads off cleaning them, painting parts and the block. (any paint type suggestions.) Going to add shorty headers. should i change the main seal? motor will b on an engine stand.

whats your budget? Depending on where you live you can get a rebuilt 5.8 for as little as $1200 all done by a machine shop. Do it yourself maybe for half that. Maybe less if it dont need pistons or anything major. I spent about that on the engine in my mustang.

You could buy a kit at rock auto starting at 360. You would have to have the block at least honed and I'd want the heads reconditioned I can have heads redone for less the $200 here and honing I could get done for around 50 bucks you could also rent a hone tool.. and the heads are optional. If you didnt touch the rotating assembly just got a timing chan kit and gaskets you could do that.. All in your confidence level in the engine..
