Question about fuel economy - 4.9l I6 Vs. 460cid V8

Yeah, I know. Both ends of the extreme.

This is the deal. I have used/abused a 1993 F250 in my small landscaping business for about 6 years now. It has the 4.9l I6, five speed manual and 4.10 gears. It does everything I want it to do, but...

leaky rear main. I've seen this problem before in my experience with the 4.9 I6, which IMO is a fine engine "within its limitations", one of which is the rear main.

Now, I've spotted, in my hometown, a 1995 F250. Looks like a nice specimen. 111k miles, air conditioning, well taken care of. Five speed manual. UNKNOWN GEARS. 460 V8. They're asking a bit too much for it but if I decide I want it I'll just offer the KBB price for it.

So... what kind of difference could I expect in fuel economy between the two? Both just driving around and pulling a 17' landscape trailer?

Thanks.

(Bonus question: Can someone suggest a good VIN decoder that will give me the information on the differential?)

Not sure about the trucks. But I wish you would give up the landscaping and go back to coaching at OU. Bob Stoops just isnt getting the job done anymore.

Ouch! Ain't that the truth... Too loyal to his old buds from the Iowa days, it appears to me.

Update: Just found the VIN decoder on this forum which tells me that the truck I'm looking at has the 4.10 gears. I was kinda hoping for the 3.73 gears myself, but anyway the original question stands. Wondering about the fuel consumption.

From the expierience i've had, the 460 loves fuel. We had one in a work truck that i doubt got 10mpg.

From: missing Texas...
the 460 with the lower gears will do better while towing...

and poor inline 6 is probably working superhard to move whatever it is your towing
