changing main bearings.

Anybody ever tried to change the main bearings while the motor is in the truck? My rear main is leaking a bit and from searching around quite a few people have said that theres a possibility of the mains being the culprit. Its not leaking bad, maybe a quart every 2500 miles or so. So im not gonna change em just yet. Just for future reference.

changing the seal is super easy once you get the trans out. You have to take the pan off and that is such a hassle might as well pull the motor if you do that might as well overhaul the whole thing.

Actually I can have my pan off in about 10 min. Its all wide open. I forgot to mention im SAS' d. Only thing I have to tske off is drive shaft. My thought was to pull tranny back, drop pan and the crank, replace the seal and bearings and do it all im reverse. Sounds easier then it probably is, im sure im missing something lol

I have changed the mains before. Remove the main caps (one at a time) then take a nail that will fit in the crankshaft oil supply hole. Cut the nail shaft so the head will sit tight against the crank. It must have a thin enough head on it so when you rotate the crank the nail head will pass between the crank and the crank bore. You will need to rotate the crank about 180 degs so the nail head catchs the bearing and rolls the bearing out of position and into your hands. Then reinstall a new bearing using the same method. The cap bearings are obviously easy.
