Post No rev limiter?

Passing someone, my truck went past 5500rpm (around 50mph). I'm not sure it was even floored all the way. Is this nomal operation?

MOVEOVER,
I have twisted my 4.6 to around 5700-5800 and never hit the rev limiter. I too wondered why but I wasn't worried about it, the small V8 shouldn't have any problems at that RPM, though my trucks seems to quit making any useful torque and HP past 5200 so I usually shift around 4500 all the time.

My 5.4 cuts out at 5000 rpms, I guess since it has such a long stroke.

Cool

MOVEOVER The exact thing happened to me the other day! I was merging on the freeway driving a 97 f150 4.6 4x4 automatic. (It wasn't mine) I was accelerating and looked down at the tach. I was at the 5,600 rpm and climbing! Wow I thought. The reason was it was in the "2" postion on the shifter which wouldn't alow it to upshift.
