Post check engine light

I have a '98 Nastruck,25,000 miles and my check engine light is staying on. Called Varsity ford in College Station and they said to bring it in that it was emissions and no big deal. I have the B&M shift plus, is it going to mess with the computer when they run a check on it? Also I'm getting quite a bit of noise from the valve's. I notice it at idle and when I kick it into passing gear.(lots of clicking) What's up? I took the reducer out of the elbow, also have a flowmaster. I'm wandering if they are going to give me a hard time considering it's still under warranty. Can anyone help me? I'm really concerned about the valve's! Good to be back online!

Really depends on the dealership. If they refuse to repair under warranty, ask them why. If they tell you it's because of a certain modification, ask them to tell you how this mod. caused the failure. If they still give you a hard time, try calling Ford customer service. I don't have the number, but I'm sure somebody around here does.

They think it's the gas filler cap. If it's not on tight the computer detects it and thus the check engine light. Just bought a Y2K on Sat, and the salesman warned me about putting the cap back on correctly after fill-up...

Gas cap off can definitely turn the light on in newer vehicles. There's a pressure sensor in the fuel tank to monitor leaks in the system to prevent hydrocarbons from escaping. I'm not sure if this is a CA thing or 50 state.

Not sure about the newer models, but I do know, first hand, that the '97's Check Engine light comes on if you don't secure the gas cap.

Anytime that light comes on, check the cap first.

My 97 has had the light on twice. Both times for faulty Oxy. sensors. Out of warranty. Cost over $400 to replace both when cost is combined. (I have the 5.4)

update! My truck when in the shop Monday morning. Today I was told I had a fouled plug. Something happened when I hit passing gear. Must have fouled the plug then, because the light came on seconds after that. I'm still waiting on the brakes, they didn't get to them today. The service manager told me that he thought I had antilocks front and back because my light on the panel says ABS instead of rear ABS,hope he's right! Hopefully I'll have my truck back tomorrow and have some brakes that are worth a dam.

My check engine light came on after vacuum loss in the fuel tank. Unfortunately, it won't go off now. I was told be the dealer this is a normal occurence if the gas cap is left loose. So, they tell me to bring it in and they'll reset the computer (for a mere $32.95). Isn't that nice? So, I'm thinking doesn't the computer reset by disconecting the battery? Or, can anyone else offer a suggestion so I can save $32.95. Thanks.

dan K: Yes you can reset the computer and turn that lite out!! Just disconnect the battery and then turn on your head lights. Turning on the head lights drains whatever reserve power you have and resets faster so you don't have to wait as long to connect the battery back up. Takes about 1 min verses about 30 minutes. If your check engine lite comes back on, then that's a good indication that whatever the problem is, isn't fixed.

Thanks Tina! I'm pretty sure that will fix the problem. Running good; might be an o2 sensor. But, I only have 14K miles.(?) Thanks again. BTW, what's all this about a sticker?
