To cam or Not to cam???

Hello everyone,

I have a few questions about my new project I'm working on. I picked up a 1997 2wd Ford expedition with the 4.6L for dirt cheap and I'm rebuilding it as a nice street driver. I'm in the process of pulling the motor and trans to clean everything up and have the 4r70w rebuilt. I'm looking for some good low end power, nothing fast since I know the truck will never best fast. Just want it a fun cruiser

Now my question is Should I cam the motor while I have it out?

I can pick up a new set of Comp cams XE270AH cams off my friend for almost nothing. Just not sure if this is a good idea or not? Will I need anything thing else if I run these cams?

I just bought a set of reman P.I. heads for it and will run the PI intake. I will also be running the OBX long tube headers and some kind of aftermarket exhaust. I will aslo be putting in all new timing kit when I tear it down.

Is there anything else I should do while I have the motor out? Once the motor is back in the truck it will be getting a custom tune done.

Well the higher stall will not be a problem since the trans is going to be sent out to get fully built!

Unless you just like spending money, I would not suggest the 270 Comp Cam. You'll need to install a 2000 rpm stall converter and it runs with a programmer only. Idle is rough and using the A/C while idling isn't happening. If none of the above are important to you, go for it. If you would like a decent cam, decent idle with a light chop, no special programmer and no trick stall converter, use the Comp Cam 268H. For the street, it's the best they make. I would suggest using their valve springs and retainers with either cam.

Well looks like I will have to look into the cams then. I want this to be a street able truck.

Any one know the difference in the xtreme energy and the tri power xtreme cams??

I have also considered a cam with Patriot Stage II heads. Supposedly the XE262H and XE262AH are decent mild cams as well and I was looking into one of them. The tri powers require a tune. Only certain extreme energy cams do. According to the spec sheets, the XE262H doesn't and apparently neither does the XE268H. The XE262AH doesn't require one but is recommended. I think anything over the XE268H does.

Bigbuckmuddah did also. But again was a 3v. I have pondered this as well as a daily driver.
