99 F150 Knocking
99 F150 Knocking
Hey all,
I have a 99 F150 Lariat. I have recently rolled my vehicle swerving to miss a deer. Either Way front end wasnt damage only the top off the cab and the fenders were scruffed up a little. I got the truck home and it started right up. Smokes a little but have now noticed a knocking sound coming from the top passenger side of the motor. It ran on its side for about 10-15 mins. Have been told it could be a rod, timing chain, or a lifter? Any help. Its not a very loud knock. Oh and its the Triton V8 5.4

If you can isolate which cylinder is knocking, then disconnect the coil for that cylinder. If the sound softens then it is probably a rod. If it stays the same then the lifter or even piston slap.
Good luck

Usually the first thing that happens, -running on its side is you'll bend the valves. Happens pretty quick since these engines do not incorporate dry sump systems. If somehow you saved that from occurring, check your PCV valve as they can sound exactly like an engine knock once they get gummed up. You noticed smoke upon re-start. Hopefully, that's just coming from the PCV system which may have flooded somewhat with oil after the accident.
Glad your okay!

Thanks. update Got the engine torn down some and noticed the timing chain is loose on the side I heard the knocking, so loose I can lift it up and it can hit the casing its in kind of sounds like the noise but not really sure hopefully it's something as simple as that.
I'm kind of surprised that the enertia switch didn't shut the truck off. It doesn't take much of a hit or a roll over trip one of those. Good thing there was no fire, or the pump would have kept feeding it.
