Question 4.6L won't start...

1994 F150, 4.6L 6cyl: Wouldn't start the other day. Looked it over real good, found nothing. Tried again a day later: started. Ran rough for a little bit. Smoothed out and ran fine the next two days (250mi). Ran across town, went to start, wouldn't again. Replaced plugs recently, checked dist cap and rotor, replaced 02 sensor, plugs look like there getting plenty of fire (pulled out, while cranking), replaced fuel filter and checked pump while replacing filter. What next??? I'm out of ideas! What would cause this inttermitant problem? You guys seem to have been around, sure would appreciate some help. Thanks in advance!!

what engine???????you must mean the 4.9 inline six. The 4.6 is the infamos triton V8. You have done everything I would have done. It's possible the computer is somehow shutting things down. Or is it possible that the fuel pump is faulty? Try to determine if it is fuel related or electrcal. good luck

I had an 88 with the 4.9. I made a 3 hour trip from up north snowmobiling. The thing ran great with not even the slightest hickup. I parked in the driveway and it sat till the following weekend. Went to start it the next saturday and it wouldn't run. It had no spark. Troubleshot the ignition. After about a week and a half, I noticed that I also had no fuel pump. I ended up removing the wiring harness from the computer all the way out to the battery and checking each wire for continuity. It turned out to be a broken 12 volt wire to the computer. There are multiple 12 volt and ground wires going to the computer. They all have to be good connections.

Question

I would check for a spark. You replaced all of the normal maintance equipment, but obviously the engine isn't getting a spark. It might be the IGNITION MODULE, or yes the computer. How many miles does the truck have on it. If you have alot I would check the module first!

Don't you mean the infamous Ignition Module Pastmaster?

Unfortunately, dldport says he is getting spark, so I'd look for a fuel system problem. If the pump(s)is/are OK and both tanks (if equipped) are full, then I'd pull the codes from the EEC and see what it might think is wrong. If there are no codes, then maybe check the pressure regulator on the fuel rails as well as the computer itself. Wiring is always a suspect with intermittant problems.
