2003 5.4L 2 Valve OR 3 Valve IS THE QUESTION

I have a 2003 Expedition, EB, with a 5.4L engine that I will be doing a plug and coil change on soon.
I have been unable to determine whether the heads are 2v or a 3v, therefor unable to determine what kind of plugs I will need to get.
Could someone tell me how to determine which it is?

Thanks in advance

Can you post a pic of the engine bay?

I know in the F150 world the 5.4 3v didn't get used until 2004, not 100% when the expy picked it up

You might be able to run the VIN online, or look at the engine code on the door jam sticker

It's a 2 valve.

3 valves are from 04 +

4 valves were in the Lincolns back then.

EDIT: If you still want more assurance, -pull #1 plug to determine. Takes 5 minutes.

I merged your two threads into one. We only allow one thread per subject topic, to lessen confusion of people trying to help you.

If the 8th character in the VIN is "L" it's 2v, if it's "5" it's 3v. I'm 95% sure an 03 Expy will be a 2v, and the correct plugs are SP479's.

EDIT: It looks like the Expy didn't get the 3v till 05 as a midyear change.

Patman, I sincerely apologize to you as moderator and to the forum members for making a double post. As you may have seen I screwed up the title on the first one and could not figure out how to delete it. I did attempt to. Won't happen again.

Thanks for your help!

No worries. Did you figure out what engine you have?

Thank you Patman, as per your suggestion I began rounding up numbers from the VIN, engine group # etc. and even before I had a chance to start doing a search GLC and JBREW answered the question.
jbrew was positive it was a 2v and glc confirmed it through the VIN look up so I have already bought the plugs for the 2v engine SP-479
So thanks a ton guys!

While tinkering in the engine bay last night I thought I would start blowing out some crap with compressor, loosening some bolts and breaking loose some wire connections which leads me to another question. I was going to pull off the wire connection to the coils and could not pull them off. Is there some kind of snap, something I should push in or pull out to get them off or are they just really tight?

I doubt that they have ever been off since new. I am at 97K. If there is no locking device of some sort I will just keep wiggling them until I get them off.

Thanks again to all of you

Yea, they lock in place. Have a look at the connector with a flashlight, -you'll figure it out once your able to see them well enough. If you have to, grab an old tooth brush while using a little possessed air to assist with working things free.

Once you can depress that locking tab, they'll free right up. Ford uses weather seal connectors there. So yea, just clean well enough to disengage the locking tab and they should de-cork.

If any of that above gives you any flack, - I'd just grab the largest set of bolt cutters you have and just bite into those goofy looking orange things. Something smart will surely happen..

Just kidding with that last entry. Crap! I hope you read ahead a little..

Stick that air nozzle up to your lips and do the 'pedal to the metal" thing and you'll think it's "possessed".

Hi Guys and once again thank you for your help.
It has been raining here (SoCal) off and on for the past few days so I didn't get started on the job until today. I got the passenger side done today and will finish it tomorrow hopefully.
My scanner showed a misfire on #4 so that is where I started. I figured that if I could get that one taken care of the rest would be a cakewalk. It was interesting what I found. Someone either lied or the previous owner was not paying attention. All of the plugs on the passenger side were Motorcraft except one. Guess which one it was???? Right!!! # 4 cylinder had an Autolite plug.
I no longer have a misfire I also went ahead and put a new Motorcraft coil along with the new plug . I didn't want to have to do that one again.

JBREW--So far I have not needed to use the bolt cutter idea but I do still have the driver side to go. And yes I did read ahead for about 3 days before I even posted this thread.
By the way is it possible to do the drivers side without removing the fuel rail?
I would rather not unless absolutely necessary.
I read a reply you gave another poster about removing it but that kinda scares me to think about attempting that. Never have had to deal with fuel rail, injectors etc.

Anyway I am on the road to success, thanks to you guys and the forum.
Will get the job finished and let you know if I get stuck.

Thanks Again Later
