Fuel additives??
Has anyone had any experience(good or bad) with fuel treatments or fuel injector cleaaners? Ford approves most and my dealer told me that a fuel injector cleaaaner added every few fillups would keep the engine innards nice and clean, free from carbon/varnish build up. Any thoughts?

The best I have found is Chevron Techron. Use it once every 10 to 20k.

I belive this has been covered before somewhere.
I had a NIssan for 106,000 miles and never used it no problems either.
I don't plan on using it in my F150 either.
I think that it is so diluted that it doesn't do much good.

Triton46: Thanks for the advice! I used the Chevron Techron to solve a rough idle. Granted, it didn't make the engine completly smooth but it was an improvement. Not bad for about $5.00/bottle

I have used Sea Foam and it has worked well for me in my previous cars. I will us it about every 12k on my F-150 to keep those injectors clean.

I have used the Castrol and Valvoline Fuel System Treatment. It made a big difference. I used to be a mechanic for a lawn company and had 16 E-250 vans. Techron is also good, although I never used it. It is what Chevy sells as their fuel system cleaner, just rebottled.

I've used Redline fuel treatment in my previous 97 4.2L. It actually improved the mileage by about 2-3 mpg. Will most assuredly use it in my 5.4L again too...

All that I know of only put additives in their premium 92/93 octane gasolines. (YET ANOTHER REASON TO RUN THE GOOD STUFF) My dad has only ever run premium fuel in his (Ford) vehicles and has never had a dirty fuel system problem. As a matter of fact, I don't believe he's ever bought a gallon of regular in his life.

some gas companies actually have some of that stuff already in the gas, for example, ESSO in Canada has excellent cleaners in the gas.

My family has only run the cheapest 87 octane we can find and have never had any fuel problems, except one stopped up filter on an 87 F-150(it probally had over 100,000 miles on the filter). We usually keep our vehicles for atleast 200,000 miles. All fords.
Amoco and others put it in all thier gas lines. I only use Amoco. I am however impressed with some of the new technology in cleaning systems such as the ones that you hook up to the scrader valve and run the engine for a while on cleaners only. 3M makes one. I may spring for the 80 bucks or so to do this at 50K.

I've used Chevron's Techron and know for a fact that it helped a slightly rough idle, and also slightly improved throttle response. It's not night and day in difference, but occassionally my 1997 4.6L at idle would shake just a little bit. After one tankful treatment, the rough idle is gone and so far has remained that way. Also Mike from Superchips recommends Amoco and I believe Texaco as some of the better gasses to use in your vehicle. Evidently they have a higher "energy content" per gallon, and use better grade additives........just my 2 cents
As far as fuel additives not working, I have seen them work first hand.
Down in el paso they have emmissions testing. Several places I know of use Amsoil PI when a car fails. They put in 6-12 oz and have that car drive around for about 1 hr. Then they come back an it reduces their emmissions to a passing level.
I don't think the additves they put in the gas do enough, especially with the use of methenol blends. These tend to build up carbon more than straight gas. Same goes with the oxigenated fuels. It just makes sense to keep your fuel system clean, for optimum performance and fuel economy.
I also have a diesel, it is a must to run some type of fuel system cleaner!!

I use Amsoil P.I Improver in my truck(preferred customer) as well as other Amsoil products oil, ATF, and apperance products. I dumped in about 6oz of this stuff and I can really feel the difference. i plan on using this stuff at every oil change to keep my injectors, pump, and filter squeaky clean
i would like to get those water removers that amsoil has before too long for my truck too. Just my preference!!!!!!!!!
