What is this plug for?

I recently had some repairs done to my 2007 fx2 and I noticed this plug hanging out. It has a cap so I'm assuming it does not go to anything but the mechanic did not secure it properly. Now I have a check engine light because this thing was burning up next to exhaust. Any ideas what it is for? It goes next to the oil filter and then goes all the way up to the camshaft sensor.

If you have a CEL you need to read out the codes. That will give you a much better clue. Most parts stores will read them out free if you don't have an OBD2 scanner. Post the exact P-number code, not what the store says it means.

I don't think thats a plug or cap on that connecter. I think its the male connecter from whatever it's suppose to be plugged into and the wires are pulled completely out of it. CHT sensor wire?

A variable assist connector, steering deal. Used with the Navigators and Interceptor vehicles. Not an option on that vehicle. The connectors free. That's the way they cap them sometimes.

EDIT: Opps! -Not on Interceptors, - it's a 4wd thing. Harness connector. Nav/Lincoln had the set-ups.. Those empty connectors have been around since 97. In 97 they were found mostly on the 4six harness for some reason. Sometimes refereed to as variable assist orifice connector.

Good call jbrew!. For some reason after you said what it is I can now see the cap as a cap not a male connector, I was visualizing it completely wrong. It appeared that the wire was way too heavy for the assist harness as well but you are right...again!

Good to know guys ! I appreciate it. I was going nuts thinking it went somewhere.

I fixed one code by replacing the bank 2 vct sensor. I still have a p0345 (camshaft position sensor a bank 2) and p0349 ( Intermittent signal same sensor)

**** I had a bad knock on bank 1 and my mechanic replaced the bank 1 camshaft a lifter and an adjuster as well as camphasers for bank 1 and 2. Funny thing is there was nothing wrong with bank 2 really but i figured we are in there might as well do the crazy camphasers anyway. Now for some reason the camshaft sensor on bank 2 is throwing the previously mentioned codes....I replaced it..... still throwing codes after i erased them at advance auto. Any thoughts ideas and suggestions are very welcomed.

Tried to stand on my head to make sense of that one particular pic. Didn't help at first, until I lost balance and then... -It clicked on the way down..

Why is it when I see your user name, I get this image of someone juggling "Degas" bottles ?

Strange huh?
