2000 Milage Improving???
Well, the 2000s are popping up all around. I went this weekend and test drove one very similar to the one I have on order (arriving 9/13/99 I hope). I noticed on all 2000 5.4 4x2 models that the milage was 15 city and 19 Hwy! I looked around and noticed that's the same milage as on the 99 4.6 4x2s. If I'm not mistaken, the 99 5.4 models were rated at 17 Hwy. Has anybody else noticed this increase in milage on the 5.4s or did I dream the whole thing?
Sweet dreams!!!
No really, as much as I hate to say this I did download some of the documents off of BON before they were shut down. Although the document I was looking at was for a Cobra, it had a column listed for mileage change.
This tells me two things: First, Ford IS very detail oriented when it comes to the car building business. Hell, they are on the verge of being number one (in total that is. We all know they are number one in trucks). Second, one of the biggest compliants they hear about there trucks is mileage. If they can affect this postively they will - no question in my mind. The spreadsheet I was looking at showed the impact of reducing the weight of a component on the Cobra by 15lbs and how that affected the mileage (I think it was .0005 mpg).
I hope your right. The 5.4 is a good engine it just uses to much fuel. If they can squeeze out a few more miles from a gallon of gas I say - Great job Ford engineers!!!

I think they are doing this by changing the gears from 3.55 to 3.31?
As far as I know no engine mods

i noticed that the 2000 5.4s with the orp
now come with 3.55 gears instead of the 3.73
that the 99s had.
so now they get 1 mpg more

My curiosity got the best of me. I drove by the Ford Dealer in Decatur, AL yesterday and double checked. Yes! The 2000 5.4 4x2 gets the same milage as the 99 4.6 4x2 (15 city / 19 Hwy)! The 99 5.4 4x2 sitting beside it was rated at 13 city / 17 Hwy. That's 2 more MPG without a loss in HP. Does this me if I do the K&N and Gibson SuperTruck that I could possibly get 20+ MPG on the highway? I'll believe this when I see it. I wonder what Ford did to get the extra 2 miles...
54regcab,
The 5.4 (15/19 MPG) that I drove was a SC Lariat 4x2 3.55LS. I don't think the LS rearend was effecting the MPG numbers on the sticker since another without it was the same milage. I can't say about the 3.73. Can you get this on a 4x2? There were not any 2000 4x4s on the lot.
BTW,
My truck that supposed to be in 9/13/99 is:
5.4 4x2 SC Lariat Flareside
Black on Gold
Medium Parchment Interior
Class III Towing
3.55 LS
Captains Chairs
6-CD Changer
Sliding Rear Window (non-leaking type I hope)

The 99 5.4 engine has inproved heads intake and a different cam. The increase in MPGs was offset by the availability of the 3.73 rear end on the 4x4. For 2000 the 3.73 is no longer available unless you opt for the highest payload rating. This in effect makes your 150 a 250. Ford dropped the 250 nomanclature and now calls it an F-150 with the 7700 lbs rating. So for 2000 you can in effect get an F-150 with a 3.73 regardless of the drive configuration.

54regcab...
Yes you can get the 3.73 limited slip rear axle for a 2000 F-150 4 x 2 (only available for the 7700 payload group though)..they were also offered for the 99 model year F-150 4 x 2. I read a post in the past that said you could only get the 3.73 in 4x4..that is not correct either.
I have the 1999 and 2000 F-150 booklet(s) sitting right in front of me.
The 7700 payload group F-150s are also in 4x2..just in case your were wondering.

Do any of you know if there are similar improvements in the 4.6L engine for 2000...that is better mileage or even a HP increase? I am trying to decide which to purchase with mpg a big factor.

My wife and I went looking at Expeditions and Excursions this weekend (my F150 SuperCrew plans may be in jeopardy) and the Expedition with a 4.6 and 3.31 rear end was rated at 20 MPG. I think it was rated at 18-19 for 1999. Test drove a 4.6 Exped, and was quite surprised at the power. I had driven a 1999 F150 S/C with the 4.6 and 3.08 rear end and was UNimpressed.
