I just took a 1200 mile trip in my 2000 with a 5.4/3.55 rear and ran a tank and a half of fuel thru it before I took a reading on my gas milage.
I filled up twice, first tank 17.85 MPG and that was 50% interstate and 50% mountains.
My last fill up was about 25% mountains and 75% intersate, with pouring down rain and running 70-75 MPH (avg) and got 17.95,so maybe Ford has helped the gas milage, it sure should have, cause my overdrive free wheels like he__ now.I won't make much comment yet, the truck is too new......

I've noticed that a lot of times people boast about their milage and then they point out that they achieved that unbelieveable mileage while driving in the mountains. (assuming that the mountains lowered the gas mileage that would normally occur)

But this has been my experience, and I can't exactly explain it:

I bought my '97 F150 new in 3/97. From then until the beginning of this summer, I got pretty much 16-17 mpg every tank. All this was while I was in Tennessee.

This summer I lived in Boulder, CO and drove through mountainous roads ALL THE TIME. Rarely did I drive interstates. Guess what? My mileage was 18-21 mpg EVERY TANK!

Now that I'm back in TN again, mileage is back down to 16-17mpg. DANG!!!

DCD, I think your mileage improvement can be explained by the attitude. The attitude in Boulder is much higher than the attitude in Tennessee, which is almost sea level.

Of course this theory doesn't explain why the Titans are 3-0 and the Broncos are 0-3.

Speaking of getting as good or better gas milage in the mountains, I"ve always gotten better milage going north (Va,Pa,), cause the gas is a better quality, doesn't have all the menthanol(sp) and what ever.
Been doing this for the past 20 years and its alway worked out the same way all these times.
I just filled up here in Raleigh and I'll bet I drop 2MPG on driving interstates back out of NC..That's using 89 octane.

The cruise control is not on.
Your foot is not on the gas.
The tach drops to about 1100.
...and after all that you're still steady gettin it.

In traffic it is a pain. In my old vehicles, if you come off the gas you start to slow down and not eight miles down the road either. I don't like to be lighting up my brake lights on the interstate, I always thought that displayed bad driving habits but, in this truck there's no way around it.

dsrtnoys, Raoul said it exactly as good as it can be said, I take it that Ford put this "Better Idea" in the 1999s too....
I have always admired Ford for their auto trannys, as to to let up on the gas and the motor slows you down, keeping you from becoming a BRAKE RIDER...
Coming down I-95, that's how I felt, I finally just dropped out of overdrive to slow me down, hell if I keep hitting the brakes as much as I was, I'll be in the shop in 8-10,000 miles getting new pads.
Is there someone out there that can tell us what Ford did, to make this free wheeling occur? I know for fact my 97 E4OD didn't come close to any type of free wheeling.
I think maybe that's how the milage increase is suppose to work??.....any help on this subject welcomed, maybe I should start a "new topic".....2000 automatic--free wheeling........
Take Care

ford keeps the throttle open (idle air bypass valve) a little bit in many of the new models. It keeps the cats hot and emissions low.

ANNOYING AS HEll !!!!!!

SUPERCHIPS CLAIMS TO BE ABLE TO FIX THIS.

Talking

Gas mileage seemed to have increased by about 10% for 2000. Comparing identical drivetrains (5.4, auto, 3.55 gears) the mileage is up 2 mpg.

Whether this is a "real world" improvement or not I cannot say. But the window stickers do show a change.

I heard that the triton engines dont respond any better to either 89 octane to 93, or any higher octane for that matter, performance wise and mileage wise.

Cool

Today I test drove a '99 Lariet 4x4 with 5.4 motor and 3.55 limited slip. The window sticker says 13/16 mpg. Nice truck.

Directly afterward I drove a Y2K Lariet with
identical powertrain. Here's where I think they found the add'l mileage ...
1. Taller diameter tires on the 2000 model lower engine RPMs by 150-200 rpm at 70 mph.

2. A revalved auto trans that seems to shift into OD earlier and more often. A pain IMO.

I think I like the 99 better. It feels properly geared. The Y2K model feels a bit slugish at 58-67 mph.

Same opinion from me. I drove a '99 XLT SC 4.6 and a Y2K of the same demensions. Back to back. The Y2k seemed to shift differently. Earlier, as best as I could tell on the short drive. It's damn frustrating. The change in rear seats. The trans. The different 4.6 windsor or Romeo motors... I'm trying so damn hard to buy a Ford but they keep doing things to push me away...
