Broken oil filter mount?

I got my truck a couple of weeks ago and had been enjoying it until the other day. Somehow I threw a rock or something up into my oil filter and put a hole small hole in it. Drove in home no problem, plenty of oil. Go to take the filter off and it's too tight to get off by hand. Way too tight to get off by hand. No problem, hop into my old Ranger, head to town to get a filter wrench. I get home to take it off with the wrench, and damn, is it tight. I finally get it loose, put on my new filter on, and get in the cab to start it up. I give the key a couple of bumps to try and get bubbles out of the horizontal filter then I start it up. It's making a bit of noise, but not clicking. Shut it off after 10 sec. Get out a look. A quart or two of oil on the ground. Fire it up for a couple more seconds to see where it was shooting out from. Looked like it was the mount, but it was hard to tell. Wherever it was coming from, it was gushing. It was the right filter and it was on tight (but not too tight, I didn't use the wrench to put it back on.) Did the mount get broken when I was taking the filter off? I've searched a bit and it sounds like it's not impossible to change, just a bit messy. I just want to be sure I'm replacing the right part. Any ideas?

Oil Filter Seal

Did you make 100% sure that the old oil filter seal stayed on the old filter and came off with the old filter. Did you lube up the new seal with fresh oil so that it would not bind and "roll" when installing the new filter on the vehicle?

Two seals in one spot can be a bad thing.

First make sure that the gasket/O ring from the old filter came off with the filter. If it stuck to the filter adapter instead of coming off then you have installed the new filter over the old gasket and it will leak bigtime. I would almost bet thats what has happened. I personally have never seen one of the oil filter adapters break from a filter removal even very tight filters but I guess it could happen. Changing the filter adapter is a pain in the butt to access but can be done. Drain coolant first and replace the adapter gasket. good luck.

Thanks guys, you were spot on. When I took the new filter off the old ring fell out. Put the filter back on and everything is fine. (Once I put 5 quarts of oil in. I knew there was a reason I scooped up so much of the gravel driveway to get it all cleaned up.)
