rattling from somewhere in the engine
Try to figure out which side of the motor makes the noise clearest, front, 1 bank, 2 bank. At this point do a bore scope looking for a very sand blasted/ steam blasted piston or 2. Now if you find one you have either a head gasket or intake manifold water leak and you are hearing a steam knock. Depending on the amount of steam the shound will change and travel around. If the intake is leaking you are looking at a hydroloc soon. Do you smell some sweet from the exhaust. When it is bad enough you will. But the early stages are just the hammer /rap a tap in the head, not the down deep hammer of a rod bearing. It can almost remind you of a Gizmo.

yet another waste of space with no input to the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I changed the oil last week Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w20 and a motorcraft filter. I dont know just sounds to me like it is something outside the engine. I have taken the belt off and it still makes the noise, maybe not as loud but still there. I have always ran Valvaline high mileage 5w30 since i bought it 8 years ago. I am about ready to give up and just drive it and see what happens. There is not a dealership here and really not a garage that i trust. Is there anything not internal that could make this sound???? If the intake was leaking coolant wouldnt i notice a coolant loss or moisture from the exhaust???
Oh you had specifics related to your problem and blew it off ,ignored it. That said, - yea, good luck getting there again. Hell, you must know everything anyway, - not sure why your even here ? You must enjoy,- the hard way..
Well thanks to all who tried to help. I did not blow anybody off. When i can i will try all the suggestions that i recieved. I dont have all day everyday to fix this thing. I do have a job and a life. What i dont have is time or patience for bickering back and forth like children. I thought i could come to this forum for help and yes some did give good advice and i thank you very much for it. For the others that only want to bitch and whine i dont have time for you. Take care all. And yes there is a trend and i see it from the same person in every post i have seen from him.
That's funny ^^ Read it all back. Your post sticks WAY OUT there as far as complaining or whiny.
No reason for your actions. You don't want to fix the thing, you just want to cry about people not helping you right.

Works both ways.
Good Luck all the same buddy

When you changed the intake manifold did you by chance lose any bolts or nuts that you never found? It is very common when people remove an intake manifold to drop a bolt or nut down into one of the cyl head intake ports. Then during reassembly they assume they just lost the part under the truck and get another bolt without checking inside these ports. I could tell you stories all day long about things we found inside intake ports after dealerships replaced the intake manifold and the engines were later pulled for an unidentified knock. The intake valve will bounce the part around making a fairly loud tap or knock.
I have a 2003 XLT with a 5.4L triton w.no upgrades as of yet. I just did a intake manifold swap which im sure everyone here knows why I was installing a new intake hahaha...anyyways, I finally cranked er' ^up^ & it has a TERRIBLE KNOCK that is VERY loose sounding & from what I have looked at and read, I very much believe that the piece that actually cracked off inside the manifold (the metal tube that links the two but on the passenger side) I believe too have fallen down inside the motor. HELPPP!!!!!!! if this were the case, where would it be located? any chance it could come outwit a change of the oil pan? job maybe just taking the valve covers off? I did change the plugs, but no new injectors just cleaned everything up as one with common sense does in these instances lol. im about toot try the taking the belt off and seeing what happens but I am really sure this is my issue. but hey that's why I came too the experts! haha
If something fell into one of the intake ports, it could be on top of the piston being slammed against the head. If you could figure out which cylinder is affected, a boroscope inserted into the spark plug hole should show the piece. Or just look into all of the cylinders. It could be something else altogether.
