Question Oil Filters

Has anyone done a comparison of the new style oil filter for the triton motors & the old standard Fl-1A?

Aside from the obvious length difference and price difference, I can't see why a person couldn't use the old style if he had the space. I'm going to do the 1st filter change this week & will cut it apart for an internal look-see. BTW, Ford's responce to my question was "your owners manual says the part # for your vehicle is blah, blah, blah....

I bet the threads are different on the new filter. Remember, the FL1A has been around since the fifties and was based on the English system of measurment. I'm sure the new filter is a metric measurement and is sized differently. Even a slight difference could be enought to ruin your engine. Don't take a chance. The filters have got to be different or they would have the same part #.

I use Frams so if you are refering to the one that used to fit (Fram's PH-8A) nearly every Ford made in the past the nipple size is different.

Question

Wisman,
What is the number of this new style filter?
I thought most all Fords used FL1A, FL820, or FL400S. All three of these filters are different. The 1A and the 820 are the same diameter, but are of differnt lengths, have different end plates and different mounting threads. The 400 of course is long and thin. For more oil filter info check out this link. http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oilfilterstudy.html

Hello all...is it possible to change the oil on late model F-150 w/out taking the truck to a shop? I have a 95' Bronco and I have been used to changing the oil myself. Is the filter easily accessible? I just ordered a Y2K F-150 and was wondering if i'll have to take it to the shop. By the way, what do you all think of synthetic motor oils?

TSSCS,

If you are getting a 4x2 it's "a piece of cake." Drain plug and filter are next to each other and "right there!"

A 4x4 is a little tougher but certainly not that difficult since the filter is placed out of the way of the transfer case.

Many of us use synthetic oil, many don't. There are a lot here that have many miles on our engines using petroleum based and synthetic oil, both old and new trucks. Whatever you feel comfortable with and if you don't mind the extra cost of synthetics.

More important is the "3 month/3000 mile" oil changes with filter done on time, all the time.....

wiseman, the oil filter on the new F-Series incorporates an anti-drainback valve (I think it is part of the filter). I do not believe the FL-1A has this feature in it. I would not substitute filters (my opinion).

The filter on my '98 F150 S/C 5.4 4X4 was located in the bumper on the drivers side. Could have kissed the engineer that put it there. Easy as hell to access. Before anyone says anything about it getting damaged in an accident lemme tell ya what I told my brother when he complained about that, "If you hit something hard enough to damage the filter you probably really should stop the vehicle, duh!"

Mute Point!

The threads on the nipple ARE different. My error for not mic'ing them earlier. The old FL-1A will NOT fit the triton motors.

Thanks to all for the comments.

the FL1A and the FL400S are the same threads (3/4-16), and both have an ADB valve. the FL1A is bigger, and the valve is nitrile whereas the FL400S' is silicone.

when i do my dual filter setup, im gonna use FL1As

IIRC, the 820's seal diameter is a little bit dofferent than the 1A/400 as well. The 1A and 400 were essentially interchangable. Many people with 400s (e.g. Escorts) would switch over to the 1As when they were on sale. It cost an extra half quart of oil to fill the system, but the extra capacity doesn't hurt anything.

I wonder if there is a difference in the media's filtration rating?
