first oil change WHEN??????
first oil change WHEN??????
I just purchased a 2006 ford f150 king ranch 5.4L and was wondering when is the best time to do that first oil change, some say early like 500 or 1000 miles and drain to rid the engine of any engine particles like flakes of metal etc, some say let it in there at least till 3000 till everything seats correctly? your opinions guys????? oh btw i plan on using mobil 1 5w20 full synthetic with a motorcraft filter if that would make any difference or not.
many thanks,

I do it at 3k, first and every time. If there are any particles in the engine, that is what the filter is for. As far as the first, you might want to let the dealer do it. That filter was put on tight. Very tight. Most that do it wish they had let the dealer the change.
I used Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend for the first few changes. I did mine at 500, 1000. At 3800, I put in Amsoil. Changing the oil a few times before 3000 or 5000 miles is a good idea according to some. Don't worry about the whole 'seating' thing with fresh oil. That is more a function of going to a full synthetic before it's time issue from what I've read.
Very peculiar incident also with wife's minivan I will add. Changed oil in her van from Honda oil (it's an Odyssey) to Royal Purple and had noticeable jump in MPG on 2 trips. I mention that because you wrote that you intend to use Mobil 1.

I change mine every 3000 miles, and have ever since it was new. Now at 42K miles, no problems. Doesn't burn a drop between services, averages 17-18 mpg, and this is with Motorcraft 5W20 and Motorcraft filters.
For all of my new vehicles I do the first oil change at 500 miles, the second at 1500 miles, the third at 3000 miles, and then change it religiously every 3000 miles from that point forward.

I bought 3 new Fords over the last year and the dealers all recommend doing the first oil change at 3K and subsequent oil changes every 5000 miles as stated in the manual. Of course, the dealers will all do the first oil change at whatever mileage I'm comfortable with (at no charge). I've typically had them change it the first time somewhere around 3500 miles when the oil starts to get a bit dark.
With modern manufacturing techniques, there's really no need to change your oil every 500, 1000 or 1500 miles on a new engine. Of course, everyone who changes their oil every 3K miles just makes me more money on the stock market, so go right ahead and keep wasting your money guys!

Well, it comes down to it being your motor and your oil, so do whatever gives you the warm and fuzzys.
For me, 3 to 5k every time.
Edit: Thats on the daily drivers. The play trucks don't get near that milage so I just do yearly oil changes on them.

I did my first oil change at 500 miles with the dealer. After that it was at 3000 with Mobil 1 and so far still on that change with only 4000 on the truck. I will do it again at 6000, every 3000 for me.
I don't really think it's necessary to do it before 3000 miles but it's cheap enough so it can't hurt. I did my first at 5000 km's (3000 miles) and have 177 000 plus km's now on her, still good when I change at 4000 km's. Ask your dealer what they recommend because I think they tell you to come in at 1000 and every 3000 after that. Go on what you think is good.

i changed mine at 500, then at 3000, and then i'll change at every 3000 thereafter...whether it's necessary to change early at 500 is subject to opinion, but it's cheap and won't hurt, so i do it
i will use the motorcraft for the first year or so, and then i might switch to mobil one...i might just keep running the motorcraft though, it is good oil...
i changed my mustang over to mobil one already though...

Heck, I've only filled it with gasoline twice since I've owned it....:o
Officially: Change it at 3k. Unofficially: Change it as early as lets you sleep well at night. I've always done mine at 500, than 1500, then 3k, but again, there's no real need for the first two.

Everyone has there own input on oil changes,I do first 1500, then at 5000 and 5k every time after that. I have a daily driver pontiac 95 sunfire and I change the oil (regular) every 8000. The car has 150k miles and burns 1 quart every 6-8k.
