2000 rpm whine
My 4.6 always makes a strange noise
from 1900 through 2100 rpm. Every
gear including N & P. Sounds about
the same pitch as a bad water pump or
a small bearing. Maybe something
resonates or vibrates at that rpm.
59k miles. Any ideas?

I don't know if this is the same sound but my 5.4 makes a certain sound from around 1700-1900 r.p.m. I have 3.55's and 31.6 in. tires. It is a resonating type sound. I think it is just the sound the engine or muffler happens to make at that r.p.m. (that's what it sounds like to me anyway). I had a Mustang 5.0 w/off road exaust that also "resonated" at certain r.p.m. However before this 5.4 I had a 4.6 and never noticed this noise so I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing.
Does this noise happen when it's somewhat cold? Mine has a certain "noise" in that range when I leave for work in the morning. It's gone after it gets warm. It's not the piston-slap I've been reading about. However, I think I have heard the "slap" right after start-up on mine. I need to check into that. Mine's a five speed though. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I don't think this is the same but it happens at 2000 RPM..it's a faint high pitched whine. The pitch is so high I can't really tell where it's coming from. It doesn't have that bearing whine to it..it sounds kind of electronic in nature. More like the whine you often hear in the cabin of a jet aircraft but it's not coming from the speakers. Pretty weird...

It may or may not be the same, but I think I hear the same thing you do. Mine is when it's cold, though. It might be the situation where you have to be there to hear it. Who knows. Like I said, it disappears after it warms up. I can't say I've noticed anything other than that. Wish I could help...

Mine does it hot or cold, every time at 2000rpm. Glad to hear it's not just me. Not too worried, I think it's the exhaust. I have the stock single ex.

Try pulling off the serpentene belt and starting the engine. If the noise is not there, it's an accessory. Reinstall the belt and take a long screwdriver, touch the tip to the accessory, and put your ear on the handle. BE VERY CAREFUL. You will be able to which component is bad.
My truck had a bad bearing in the alternator. It made the most noise in this RPM range. I had a local auto electric shop change the bearing for $20 vs. $270 (if my memory serves) for a new Ford alternator.
