Can someone please explain what an air flow sensor is. My 1997 SC 4.2 5 speed developed a bad hesitation/knock/ping when accelerating. The dealer called earlier and told me it was a bad Air Flow Sensor ($331.00 parts and labor). The truck has 46,000 miles on it (the engine has 4,500 miles on it - see old post 4.2l engine shot !!!!!! for details on that story).

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Try to get them to warranty it as an emission component failure. Emission warranty is 5 years 50,000 miles. You have a very legitimate case for repair under the emission warranty.
