Question 4.6L engine swap question

Hello to all,

My son has a 1997 F150 4x4 with a 4.6L romeo engine in it. He has acquired a 4.6L Windsor engine from a 2001 F150 2 wheel drive truck. Will this be an easy swap? or is there going to be issues with wiring harness compatibilities? Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question RE: 4.6L engine swap

Thank you for your prompt reply Sir. Would he be able to use his existing engine harness and use the coil packs from the romeo engine?

Question another question

He is asking if he used the harness from the firewall to the engine from the 2001 4.6L Windsor and used the computer box from the 2001....would this work in the 97 where the 4.6L romeo was? ...Thanks!

What I've read about the differences in the romeo and the Windsor for MY '08 are ; 11 head bolts on romeo, 13 on Windsor; 6 crank bolts on romeo, 8 on Windsor; bolt on cam gears on romeo, press on for Windsor. There were a couple other differences that I can't remember, but they all were internal. Now, this is on an '08, not sure if the same goes for your year models.

My resource for this info was wikipedia. So go there and try searching for the answers you need, you may get lucky!

Hope this helps!

Pull the Romeo engine and install the Windsor. Use the Romeo engine harness,
truck harness, and Romeo ECM and the current coil packs with plug wires. The same complete wiring you currently are using with the Romeo engine. It makes it a lot easier to keep it with coilpacks and wires than trying to change to COP's. That would entail new harnesses, ECM, etc. Before you install the Windsor check the oilpan as I believe the 2 wd pan drain will interfer with the 4x4 crossover also check the oil filter adapter. You may need to remove both of these from the Romeo engine and install on the Windsor if the oil pan has to be switched then switch the pickup tube with the pan. Make sure you get the Windsor engine flexplate with the engine as the Windsor is a 8 bolt and the Romeo is a six bolt. Either one will bolt right up to the trucks current torque converter and trans however. A few other small things but not a bad swap to do. One more thing if the exhaust manifolds and bolts look bad on the Windsor engine now is the time to change them while the engine is sitting on a stand. Good luck.
