gas survey
This has probably been asked before, but lets get refreshed. What brand of gas do you use and why? Is one better for new engines? What about additives to the gas in new or old engines? Finally, what brands should be avoided? I'm concerned with the last question because i plan to drive through Colorado, Utah, New Mexico. and Arizona next week and i want to stay clear of any off-brand gases. Thanks for your time.
This topic ran pretty good a month or so ago, you might do a search for it. Anyway Texaco,Chevron,Amoco,Exxon, Mobil seem to be the favorites. I personally would not stray outside of these for fear of getting a bad tank of gas.

If you are Superchipped stay away from Chevron. I was using Chevron 93 and getting some knock from my truck, Mike T. said it was probably the gas. Next fill up I used Texaco and it hasn't knocked yet. I never thought non race fuels were that much different.

Stay away from Marothon. My truck is chipped and the two times I used it (different locations) it pinged bad.

Word has it Sunoco has the cleanest gas here in Ontario, so that's what I use.
Tried the other brands and could feel no differnce.
Also an note on sulfur contents in Ontario fuels that I read a few weeks ago in the paper (numbers are for 87 octane ~ parts per million)
Esso 398 ppm sulfur
Shell 386
Petro Canada 350
Sunoco 135
Auto makers have been saying for eons that sulphur in fuels degrades a vehicles sensors and emmisions systems. California Emm. certified fuels are around 90 somrthing ppm.

Well me personally, I won't use anything but Chevron 89. My truck has had nothing but that, with the exception of whatever the dealer filled my tank with when I got it. But I will agree with everyone else, stick to the name brands; Texaco, Shell, Chevron, etc. However, and this is just my two cents, avoid Arco! I would rather let a horse **** into my tank than fill it with Arco (there's a pretty picture). Sure it's cheap, but it's not true gas. I believe technically it's Gasohol (spelling?). Either way, that stuff will make your engine ping. But also, realize that I live in California, our gas is so full of "other stuff" that who knows what's good for it anymore.

Here in Tennessee, my truck runs better on Amoco silver. I have used the other major brands and I find that the Amoco provides better mileage overall. Also, before I installed my K&N air filter, I would get 350 miles to a tank. After that - 400+. I love it!

I use Exxon mostly because I work at the plant and it's deducted from my check. I did use some Chevron once and it seemed to idle a little rough. Roughly 15mpg all city with the A/C wide open. Gotta have it in Louisiana

Here in Oklahoma, we don't have Arco, Mobil, Exxon,Amoco, or Chevron. I've used all those on long trips w/ good results. My best experience with locally - available brands was with Texaco or Total. Sinclair 93 octane is the highest octane available here [other premium gas in this area is 91] but it always makes the catalyst stink [and not just on the F-150.]
Something think about ... Even though many stations have the big national company sign and sell their gas, they only represent that company as a privately owned franchise. Water, debris or other impurities in the gas are "probably" a result of poor tank maintenance, not what comes from the tanker. You may fall in love with your local gas pump and have bad results with the same brand on the road. I keep notes in my atlas when I find a really good or really bad gas station on the road ... then I can stop there again if I'm in the area.
Amoco 91 I believe and a non brand near my house.
