No Fuel
No Fuel
2002 5.4 F150. Went out last week when the temp was down around 25'. Came out to the truck and it turned over but no start. I got some advice here and checked it out. Turns out I do not have fuel. I hooked up a gauge to the fuel rail and it shows 0. I crawled under the tank and listened but no whiring noise.
I checked all the fuses and they are good. I checked the inertia switch and it is at least not popped. I haven't checked for continuity yet. I checked the voltage at the inertia switch and it has 6 volts on one side.(strange?).
Looking under the truck by the fuel tank, there are 2 wire looms going to the top of the tank. One has a plug and and the other one doesn't, at least not a visible one.
Is the one with the plug the power for the fuel pump by any chance? I am looking to test for voltage going to the pump before I drop the tank.
Thanks.
Edit: I just checked the plug going into the top of the tank. I checked the pink and black wire and got 12v for 2 secs and then 6v, so I guess it is the pump for sure.
Time to start siphoning.

No, didn't try that. I just got through pulling the bed off my truck so I can reach the top. It did this one other time so I am going to go ahead and replace it. I don't want to take a chance of it going out again when I really need it.
I see that I can buy just the pump and not the entire assembly. This is significantly cheaper. Is that a safe and reliable way to go?

I ordered the replacement fuel pump last week from Napa. It took 5 days to come in
. I ordered the Delphi pump after looking around on the web for a while and seeing what people recommended (or didn't recommend). It seemed Delphi had the best positive to negative comment ratio.
I took the bed off last weekend so all that I had to do was pull the hanger assembly out. The pump came in today so I pulled it out and swapped out the pump. It was pretty easy to do and only took about 15 minutes. As a note to anyone else doing this, the new pump did not come with a filter so I had to take an extra trip to the parts store.
After putting it all back together, it fired right up. I had no idea and had never really thought about it before, but having live wires going into the tank with no shielding to isolate them from the fuel at the contact points makes me a little uncomfortable, but I have been driving it this long and so do millions of other people every day, so I guess it is fine.
All I have left now is to put the bumper back on and it will be done. Thanks for the help.
