Post speedometer sticking

I noticed the speedometer needle on my new truck, only 1 month old, was not moving for a minute or so, stuck on 20 mph, then suddenly shot up to the normal speed. I didn't hear the cable making noise which happens when the cable goes out. Is it possible the cable just needs to be lubed or could it be defective? Thanks for your responses. Bob.

The speedometer is digital on the 99 F150.
There is no speedometer cable.
If you have disconnected the battery for any reason it will do this on first startup. (computer looses memory)
Everything should be fine on out.

Sorry. I don't mean the digital read-out showing your mileage, i mean the "needle" indicating how fast you are driving.

bob1,

that is what 54regcab is talking about too. The speedometer and odometer are digital on the 99s and controlled by the computer.

Perhaps it's better to say is the speedometer is "electrical". I think the needle deflects a certain amount based on a voltage received from the tranny (via ECU?). I don't know if the signal is digital or analog. The days of cables and gears are gone though.
