Liernois cam phaser lockouts

Hey everyone,

I am a new member but I have been reading some old posts about cam phaser noise. I have been to my local Ford dealer and they will not replace the cam phasers because they say it is normal and does not affect the performance or durability of the motor. They told me that yes mine are making alot of noise, they are functioning properly.
I have called and emailed Ford customer service, but that is a dead end. Then I found a place called Livernois Motorsports. They have a couple of products. One is a lockout and the other is a limiter. Has any one installed either of these or know of their ability to quiet the noise from the cam phasers?
BTW I have an 06 5.4 with 42,000.
Any info on these products would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Cam Phasars

this summer I had some service work done at my local Ford dealer and asked him about the Cam phasar noise ( 2004 F150 5.4L) and they said that double on the Viscosity of the oil . Truck calls for 5W20 and he said go to 10W40 and should hide the noise. I know it is fustrating .He even had that put on my printout bill . Check that one out guys ! For the winter I will be using 5W20 but next spring I will switch to 10W40 and see what happens. I tow a rv trailer so the heavier oil won't hurt.

Do not use 10w40 in your truck. That is way too thick for these engines.
Your truck calls for 5w20 and thats what you use. I would not take my truck
to that dealership again. If a ford tech told you that, he needs to be doing
something else.

#1 go to a different dealer and don't say anything about the other dealer not wanting to fix the phasers. There are lots of folks here who got there's replaced under warranty at other dealers. If that doesn't work try another dealer. If you can't get it done and decide you can't tolerate the noise see below about your original question.

If you want to have a custom tune you can use the limiters or even the lockout but you have to have custom tuning to remove or limit the timing advance. If your going to do this you probably should get an after-market cam. COMP CAMS has a cam and limiter setup but it still uses the cam phasers with up to 20degrees of advance and requires custom tuning. The phasers usually don't knock once you get the RPM's off of idle so using the limiter is not going to buy you anything from the standpoint of eliminating the noise at idle.

My recommendation would be to just change your phasers and solenoids starting with the solenoids and then the phasers without pulling the front cover. Make sure you check all your lifters while you got your valve covers off. Honestly I would also check the cam towers for scoring while your in there. The new version off the Phaser and solenoids have some design changes and should last longer than the originals.

Phaser Limiter and Comp Cam Setup

2010 F-150 Harley Davidson 5.4L 3V

I recently did a huge overhaul and installed the Comp Cams Stage 2 Blower Cam with the Cam Phaser Limiters. Sounds Awesome. The custom tune is NECESSARY for the timing to be perfect. I'm very satisfied. Note that as mentioned above, you will be able to noticeably hear the phaser limiters at idle and low throttle....not all the time though. After about 2K rpm the sound goes away completely.

Before and After.

I have the Livernois Powersports cam phaser lockouts on my 2010 HD F-150 (5.4l 24 valve).Had a lifter tick develop at 150k. Time for timing chains and adjusters anyway, so I had the shop do new lifters, cam phaser lockouts, a higher output oil pump (not enough oil to heads?), plus new exhaust manifolds (rust). Runs like brand new. I do notice a slight degradation in mpg, but worth it.

Yes, what helps is a Meling M360 High Output oil pump along with lockouts or MC phasers.
