Trouble with my 2001 F150 5.4

Hello, I have a 2001 F150 4X4 with a 5.4. The truck has 172,000 mi. It has always been a very good running truck with very few problems. Recently on some occasions when I try to start it it will turn over but not fire. After several attempts it will eventually start and run fine. This will happen whether the engine is hot or cold. Over the past few weeks it is starting to happen more often. Any ideas? Thanks Bob

Bob,
It seems it is time for some maintenance.
has the fuel filter been changed? If not, start there.

on those occasions where this won't start...try cycling the key on and off a few times ...then turn the key all the way over to engage the starter. If it starts better, then you may need to further investigate the fuel pump & system pressure regulator.

Also, have you had the plugs changed?

If you haven't done so, remove and clean the throttle body housing, making sure the EGR ports are clean. Also clean the IAC & MAF sensor. While you're at it, check it over for vacuum leaks and replace the PCV.

Thanks for the info. The fuel filter was changed about a year ago, I will replace it just in case. The plugs have about 25k on them. I had the throttle body cleaned also about a year ago. I will check the MAF and IAC. I will also check and replace the PCV. I was suspecting the fuel pump but will try these other items first. Thanks again, Bob

Do you have zero fuel pressure or low fuel pressure?
