Unhappy exhaust smoke on start up

I have a 5.4 2000 Ford truck. It doesn't leak oil but it does smoke for about 5-10 seconds on start up after it has been sitting for an "extended period". An "extended period" is a week or two.

As you might guess the truck does not get daily use. Anyone else having this problem?

Question What color smoke?

If it's blue, then it's oil. Black is unburned fuel and white is just steam from the condensation that gets produced in the cold exhaust pipes and the hot exhaust coming from the engine.

I too have had this same thing happen. Only mine only sits for around two days and I only started to notice it after all my mods. My smoke is white from what I can tell and only for a second. I hope this means it is normal. I figured it was just condensation as it doesn't do it every start up..only when the nights get a little cool.

ditto. longer than 3 days and blue smoke can happen on startup. 97 4.6L motor here.

I believe it is the valve guides. crappy quality. Probably another Ford bean counter penny pinching exercise.

White smoke and if water drips out of the pipe too, it's just condensation. That's why exhaust systems rust out if you only drive short distances all the time.

Blue smoke is oil in the cylinder. Not serious if it stops right away. It's just some oil seeping past the valve guides. When it blows blue all the time then it's the rings. Time for a rebuild.....

Black smoke is unburned fuel. Not much you can do about it with it all being controlled by a compter. Could be a bad sensor, or something??

Mine has the condensation every morning. In the winter, it really pours out the pipe for about five minutes. By then, I'm on the freeway and heading to work about 20 miles away.
