Question for the "Technical minds"
Question for the "Technical minds"
O.K. here is the deal: On mon. and Tues. I have to visit 80 stores. I'm on the road for about 8 to 10 hours a day, spending as little as 5 min. and as much as 15 min. in each store at a time. I never know how long it will take in advance. Sometimes I leave the truck running, and somtimes I don't. This usually depends on if I'm parked in the loading zone or not. (L.Z.=yes, Parking spot=no) In the summer, when it's really hot, I'm not completely sure if I should turn it off and then have the truck work O.T. to cool the cab back down, or just leave it run with the air at the lowest setting, so that the truck stays cool. (this is what I currently do) I do have one trick, however, as I go along I must pickup the "returned products" and instead of putting these in the back of the truck, I put these in the backseat to fill the cab up so that there is less space to cool. I am meticulous in my maitenance and have a trans. cooler. Just wanted some input in to this type of driving. Thanks in advance!
Yes: these products usually come out of an airconditioned environment, so they are cool.
And Yes: I figured that if it is stolen, I would only have to replace the window and not the IGN. (how did you know?-I'm one up on ya) But, the last laugh is mine, because only the key is in it not the house keys or (more important) the alarm botton, so if they steal it, they better not shut it off!
besides, this vehical IS uniquely mine, so it could be "spotted from a mile away"(good luck catching it, though)

In regards to placing returned products in the back seat, yes there would be less space to cool, but you should also take into consideration the ambient temperature of these items.
e.g. - If the items are warmer than the temperature inside your cab, it will be defeating the purpose due to the physics of heat transfer. Basically, they will raise the temperature inside your cab, and your AC in turn will have to work harder to lower the temperature of the items.
Keep in mind, the opposite would be true if the ambient temperature of the items is lower than the cab temperature.

I'am not a "professional", but I would recommend that you keep the truck running. Probably will save a little gas, and wear n' tear on the good ole starter especially if you may or may not start your truck up to 40x in two days. Just my .02

Sounds like you are a DRUG OR ALCOHOL RUNNER. By that I mean you only stop for 5 to 15 min. and off you go again!!! Just giving you a hard time.

Plus, when the truck is stolen, you'll only have to replace the broken window and not the ignition switch, too.

Andthensometoo,
If theft of your truck is a concern, you could put a hidden switch in the circuit with makes you press the brake pedal to shift the truck into gear. I'm sure it will be simple, cheap, and baffel any would be theif.

Bent6, Ford has already incorporated that in to it's design (97 and up). So does this mean you are not a Ford owner? (!Busted!) that's o.k. we have a few other GM folks that hang out here on F150online. Your welcome, as long as your "house trained"
Thanks for the sugestion though

Andthensometoo,
It's ok, Bent6 is an old friend, unknown to me personally but anyone that admires and expounds the old Buick turbos and Grand Nationals can't be all bad......

Andthensometoo: I'm pretty strict about people coming in my house and truck too. In the house people must take off their shoes, I do relax that rule in the truck but I keep a small broom to brush off their shoes if they're real dirty
Andthensometoo,
I have a 97 XLT F-150 S/C LWB with 175,000 miles on it. What I was talking about was using what Ford installs as a safety feature ( all/or almost all new cars with automatic transmissions have this feature) for a security device since you leave the truck running with the key in the ignition. Even if the truck is running, if you cant get it in gear you can't drive it away. To do this you need to put a hidden switch in the circuit for the solenoid that allows you to put it in gear once the brake pedal has been pressed.
Once I had a friend who had a 90 GT that was almost stolen. The thief peeled the steering column, but the car wouldn't start because on Fords you need to push the clutch in to enable the starter. I thought this along the same line, except, your truck is already running and you can modifiy this circuit to keep the would-be their from putting the car in gear! I hope this clears up what I meant.
