Question fuel filter

Ok, the time has come to change the fuel filter. I ran out and bought the filter and the tool to release the clips on the line. I get it all home and after looking at the old filter, clips and the "tool" I realize I don't have a clue how any of it works. There wasn't any directions with the tool other than to release pressure off the system first. My questions are; where do you release the pressure and, how do you get the clips and filter off? The tool looks ike a **** off a cabinet, round with a slot cut along the side. I'm guessing that this is where it slides over the fuel line??? Anyways, I know I have seen some things posted about this but the search wouldn't work for me. I hope you guys can offer some insight. Thanks!

V10 Man, use that **** the shorter end and push in gently till you hear a slight click or till you feel the end pop in and the line should release and do it the other end also.
It takes a little time to make the end slip in, just wiggle it in while rotating will help. I changed my filter three times already.

The Haynes manual says that there are two ways to realease the fuel pressure. One way is with a pressure gauge - don't have one and the other is using the factory fuel cut-off switch. I don't know on the V10, but on the V8's this cut-off switch is under the passenger side dash right above the kick panel. Activate this cut-off and then run the engine until it dies. That shouldn't take more than a couple of seconds.

Oh, be sure and wear some goggles or something to cover your face. Even though all of the pressure is supposed to be relieved, I still got a face full of fuel.

Do I understand correctly that the fuel pump can be toggled on and off with this switch? I was under the impression that only a collision of some sort "tripped" it.

On the Nissan pickups I used to drive, I merely yanked the fuse for the fuel pump. After the engine sputtered and died, the system was depressurized. I'd still get fuel everywhere, but at least it wasn't spraying.

BTW, where is the fuel filter located on our F-150's?

Crazy C: The Haynes manual says that you can turn off the fuel pump with this cut-off switch. I have always used the fuse.

Thanks for your replies!!! I Took another shot at it this weekend and as it turned out, it's easier that I had imagined. I parked my truck in the garage for about an hour to cool off before doing the work. I could not get the fuel switch to turn off so I just took my chances with pressure in the line. When I unhooked the line there was no pressure. Only a little gas leaked out of the filter. I would recomend following Ford's recomended service interval (15K miles). I have 18K miles. When I got the old filter completely off I drained the fuel out of it. The fuel on the "in" side was a dark redish/brown. The "out" side was normal looking. Once again, thanks for your help!
