Unhappy Ford confirmed wrong radiator size via email

I registered on the "Ford Owners Connection" site and drilled down to a link requesting technical details on the build sheet of my new Screw. I asked them what size radiator was installed in my truck. (My truck has the small radiator at present).

https://www.ownerconnection.com/FormsLoginSSL.asp
go to "contact us" and go to the "Interactive Info Center".
Site is slow....
Here's Ford's reply;

Thank you for your message of 07/14/01 regarding your 2001 Ford F-150.
We appreciate the time you have taken to inquire about the radiator size
for this vehicle.

Thank you for your continued support of Ford trucks.

Our records indicate that your vehicle is equipped with the Heavy Duty
Electrical/Cooling Group. The package contains a super engine cooling
(radiator upgrade) which would mean your vehicle was manufactured with a
1.42 inch thick radiator core.

We hope this information assists you.

Mr. Brown, your satisfaction is valued. Our goal is for your ownership
experience to be an enjoyable one.

At Ford Motor Company, we consider the satisfaction of our customers as
one of our most important objectives. If you have any other inquiries
or concerns, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to
address them.

Thank you for contacting Ford Motor Company.

Sincerely,
Rebecca

Let this email do the legwork for you. I'm sure with this I can get the 1.42" installed with no problem. The question is, "do I really want to let them work on it and possibly hose something else up?...

That's a legitimate concern. I'm don't think I would have gone ahead with the radiator replacement if the dealership had insisted on putting the 1.42" radiator in my 2001 F150. As it was, my service manager had already told me that Ford testing indicated the 1.42" radiator didn't cool any better than the 1.02". Then, when my brother went to see about getting his standard radiator upgraded, the service manager read him a fax that stated, "Ford testing has shown that the 1.02" radiator cools as efficiently as the 1.42" upgrade... " Since my brother has a 2000 F150, and he was supposed to have a 2.20" double-core radiator, the Ford fax meant nothing to him. At that point, however, I decided it wasn't worth subjecting my truck to the mechanical mayhem that could ensue, to get a radiator that didn't perform any better than the original one. When my service manager agreed to install the 2.20" Lightning radiator, I decided it was worth the risk. The 1.42" radiator may be a good upgrade choice: I just took Ford's own stated "facts" and used them to get the biggest radiator offered.

Many BB members have had their radiators replaced; only a couple have reported any problems with the installation. Good luck with your truck, whatever you decide.

Radiator Email Confirmation

I posted this previously in the SuperCrew board:

My experience to date:

I have been to my dealer twice, first time the Service Rep, second time the Sales Rep (Fleet Manager). Each time I left an info package regarding the radiator issue. Each time they knew nothing about the issue.

The Sales rep did tell me to go to the "Fordvehicles.com" website and enter the "Owners" page. To get into the Owners page you need to register...it did take about 4 attempts to get logged in, but finally I did. I do not remember the exact location, but if you are persistant, you can get to a spot which will allow you to email questions regarding the equipment on your specific vehicle. I inquired about what thickness of radiator core my vehicle should have?

I received a response the next day. It said based on my trucks VIN # and other info they found, I should have a 1.42" thick radiator core. Of course mine is 1.02" thick. At least now I possess an email from a Ford Rep indicating the radiator thickness.

I have passed this on to my Sales Rep, but have not received a response from him.

Hope this helps.

Cool

I just towed my 6200# camper through the Texas hill county in 100 degree weather and my truck did not run hot at all. I used the test function and watched as the temp only went to 102 a few times and the gauge read in the center. I have noted on my service log at the dealer that I thought that I needed the 1.42", but now I think Ford might know that I don't need it. I would like to know how hot my tranny was running though.

FYI 102 deg C = 215.6 deg F Seems alittle warm to me. Truck is supposed to run around 195 deg F.
