drain your radiator a bit
pull off the hose
take off the thermostat housing
replace the gasket (actually i think it uses an o ring)
then put it back together and refill

Also before you restart the engine remove the COP's on that bank and check for coolant in the plug wells. Blow them out with compressed air, apply dielectric grease, and reinstall the COP's. If coolant seeped in around them one or more (the rough running) could be damaged. Good luck.

That's not the thermostat housing so replacing the thermostat gasket won't fix that. That is the heater return on the coolant crossover where they were common to leak/crack. Which is what has happened to yours. Your intake manifold will most likely need replaced.

As far as your cop's, when the manifold is off for replacement, that would be a good time to clean each plug well out, replace the plugs and inspect the cop's. Which look original to me. I personally would just buy a whole new set, as yours look original and your engine looks to have some mileage.

They were known to crack/leak at the joint here....which is non repairable. Some have plastic welded with so so results but the ultimate fix is replacement.

Sucks for him. By the sounds of it, he may not know much about mechanics and won't be able to fix it himself. Get the lube out and hope the shop/dealership is fair. Not sure, but with the new intake around $250 if I remember right, new gaskets and probably 4-5 hours on the books.. It could be anywhere from a 600-1k fix. But for the do it yourselfer... more around $300

I think Dorman sells replacement intakes now. I'd check that out or find a used one , -an 03 w/improved composite @ Car-Part.com.

Did anyone read the title of this thread in George Takei's voice?
