F150 Diesel??
F150 Diesel??
Anyone else out there interested?? Have a '97 S/C which is possibly the nicest, best engineered vehicle I ever had, but the fuel mileage is Lousy......if Ford could place the 4BT3.9 Cummins at about 175 HP,or a similar engine, would be absolutely perfect.
This combo should deliver better than 20 MPG in town, and maybe 25+ on the highway....not interested in Brute power, operating economy/reliability is my interest... No, I don't need a Super Duty...I use the 150 for general runabout duty, and pull a Popup camper with it....

the torque of most diesel engines makes it so that the rest of the drivetrain, must be heavy duty also. usually by the time you prepare the rest of the truck for that power, you are right back to the weight of a heavy duty/super duty truck. torque kills trannys, not hp
True, but the 4BT doesn't put out the kind of raw power the 6BT, or the Powerstroke does.....F150 would need 175 HP and possibly 300-350 Lb.ft. of torque- about where the 5.4 is on less than half the fuel....

N3DDY,
The Ford PSD will not fit in the engine compartment of F150s as they are built. This is another reason the great 300 cu in
straight 6 engine was discontinued ..... won't fit in the new model F150s.

I read somewhere (I think it was Blueovalnews.com) that Ford is looking at the possibilty of offering a V6 version of the Power Stroke in the F150 for the 2001 model year. Not sure if its true, but I sure would like one!!

V6 Powerstroke would be OK,but was kinda hoping for something not quite as heavy...where I live, a 2wd pickup serves my need quite well...but with a heavy IH engine in the front, would probably need 4wd to get around.....4BT Cummins would be considerably lighter...and smaller......would even put up with a power bulge in the hood.....for the inline engine....

I get stuck behind granny most of the time or in lots of traffic so 0-60 means nothing. But 20 mpg would!!

My only question is this...... who buys a full size pick-up and worries about gas milage!? If you're worried about milage, buy a small truck, sedan, or Metro! I have never even considered milage when buying full size trucks, and at one time had 4 for a landscape business!! We won't even mention the gas bills, but that was all part of having trucks! As for a diesel in a F-150, Ford will make what it feels the general public wants, perhaps those of you that would buy one should contact Ford R&D about it. One concern I'd like to bring up to those of you that would like it, availability and cost of diesel fuel. Is it convient, cost, etc? I personally wouldn't want to hear the diesel all the time. Just my two cents, no change given!

As for listening to the Diesel, I have been a Bus Driver since 1976......the Sound of the Diesel gives one a sense of security....real trucks sound like that.....my F150 should too!!
Diesel fuel is available everywhere I travel....

i think you can buy the diesel version of just about any truck, small or large, in other countries, that do not have pollution laws. even though it would help ford with their mileage quota, i don't think the "EPA" gods would be happy with a diesel being available in the most sold vehicle on the planet. they usually penalize you somewhere, if it's not the initial cost of the engine, then its the price of diesel at a dollar a gallon , when it should be 50 cents, just their way of keeping us in line.
94 F-150, you had the benefit of writing off your fuel cost on taxes. Not everybody has that benefit. For those of us who do not, and still want a FULL SIZE truck for light duty work, fuel consumption is a factor.
