4.2 V6 intermitently "loading" up at idle.
4.2 V6 intermitently "loading" up at idle.
I have 1997 150, 4.2 V6, 5spd, 35K. I bought the truck a week ago. 3 times when at a stop sign (different signs) the engine has started to run rough. When leaving the intersection the engine runs as though it is rich or loaded up with fuel. I have not been able to see the exhaust to see if it is black. So fa it always cleans out out about 1500 rpm and then runs fine. Any words of wisdom?
Turn off the A/C and see if that helps.
Good Luck!

If you are still under warranty, get to a good Ford dealer and have it checked out. Don't wait for the warranty to run out when you hit 36K miles.
Even if they can't figure it out, you will have started a problem history so if it turns up later (when the warranty is up) you might still be able to have it fixed for free.

Ya know, My truck has been doing the same thing lately. I have a 97 F150,v-6,5 sp, 4x4. It stalled a couple times on me. I have 38k miles. I had new plugs installed by the dealer at about 30k. I wonder what it is?? I just put in a bottle of Techron injector cleaner. We'll see if that helps

Yup... sounds like it to me....
who else wants to sue ford with me?
i have a 97 F-150 2wd Flareside 5-spd/manual
4.2L v-6 with a MarkIII lux. package....
with the heat OR the A/C on the Idle will jump about 400 RPM... and it will cause the whole truck to jump.... at first they said it was because the fuel pressure reg. was bad.... but it did not fix shat. So now i'm thinking its a Leak in the a/c (freon/r134a)
because you can smell something burning up when its on.... either way im pissed and still under the factory 36,000 ... so worst comes to worst... i'm sueing the dealer... unless ford is going to recall all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should it be possible to sue God? Will the Supreme Court take this matter up in the next session? I was born with allergies, hell, I thought it was a simple twist of fate. Now maybe instead of treating the symptoms, perhaps I should join in a class action lawsuit!
30 years ago, flashing a gun may have gotten some respect, but it became so popular in movies and real life that everyone seems to be used to it, so you better be ready to use it now if you are so stupid. The same now holds true for lawsuits. If you want to cut all communication off with the individual or company of which you have a disagreement, and pay for a $100.00/hr lawyer to try and pick up where you left off to solve what you may have solved yourself by following all the steps outlined, just mention lawsuit. Ford, like any other large company in this world, has a legal department with deeper pockets than you may have. The word "lawsuit" does not scare big companies anymore, it just pisses them off and shuts down all communication with you immediately. Be cool, follow all the steps, be calm and pleasant both in person and on the phone. Exhaust all the steps BEFORE using that word. It may keep a lawyer from victimizing you. As usual.. just my .002 j.b.

Vtcyclist: I had a similar problem when mine was new. The dealership reprogrammed the computer and it has been fine since.

hey... too bad there isn't a <SARCASTIC> tag in HTML man. huh?? its hard to understand how i'm saying it man.... ( A JOKE MAYBE ) you think i'd pay some brownnose lawyer... yea.. that'd be the day man.
yea but.... when you have facts... they settle pretty quick when everyone else has had the same problem... if they don't recall soon man... people will flip out... and it won't be me.... my truck is pretty easily fixable... you should flip to the next page on the 'engine' msg. boards..... about the people with their 4.2L engines developing headgasket leaks and causing the motor to seize and whatnot.... that would be something to fight

I have a 1997 4.2 V-6 that had the same problem. I went 9 rounds (six months) with my dealer until they finally did all the diagnostic tests possible. The cause of the rough idle was the heated oxygen sensors (HO2S). Once they replaced both sensors, the idle smoothed out. Haven't had a problem for a year now.
